Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Virtues of Umar ibn al-Khattab.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that people were being presented before me and they were wearing shirts. Some of their shirts reached up to their chests, and some were even shorter than that. Then 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared, and he was wearing such a long shirt that it was dragging on the ground. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the interpretation of this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Religion.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: I was sleeping and in my sleep a bowl was brought before me in which there was milk. I drank from it until freshness and satisfaction began to come out from my fingernails. Then what was left, I gave to Umar bin Khattab. The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is its interpretation?" He (peace be upon him) said: Its interpretation is knowledge.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I was asleep, and I saw myself at a well upon which there was a bucket. So I drew water from that bucket as much as Allah willed. Then the son of Abu Quhafa, that is, Siddiq Akbar (Abu Bakr), took it and drew one or two buckets, and there was some weakness in his drawing—may Allah forgive him. Then that bucket became a large bucket, and Umar bin Khattab took it, and I have never seen a strong chief among the people who drew water as Umar did. He drew so much water that the people watered their camels and took them to their resting places. (__QUR_N__, __XREF_N__, __REF_N__) (The scholars have stated that in this dream there is a representation and glad tidings of the caliphate of Abu Bakr and Umar after you, and a prophecy of the circumstances.)
`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: I was sleeping and I saw myself in Paradise. There, a woman was performing ablution in the corner of a palace. I asked, "Whose palace is this?" (The angels) replied, "It is Umar bin Khattab's." Upon hearing this, I remembered his sense of honor, so I turned away and left. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this, he began to weep, and we were all in the gathering with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Would I be jealous of you?"
The conqueror of Persia, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), says that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to enter, and at that time, there were women of the Quraysh sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), talking to him, speaking a lot, and their voices were raised. When Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called out, they got up and ran to hide. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) permission to enter, and he (the Prophet) was smiling. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“May Allah always keep you smiling, O Messenger of Allah!”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“I was amazed at these women who were sitting with me; as soon as they heard your voice, they rushed into veils.”Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“O Messenger of Allah! They should fear you more.”Then he said to the women,“O enemies of yourselves! You fear me but do not fear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?”They replied,“Yes, you are harsher and more stern than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, whenever Satan meets you on a path, he leaves that path and takes another.”
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Among the previous nations before you, there used to be people who were "Muhaddath" (whose opinions were correct, whose intuition was right, or to whom angels would inspire). If there is anyone like that in my Ummah, it would be Umar ibn al-Khattab. Ibn Wahb said that the meaning of "Muhaddathun" is "those who are inspired."
‘Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that’ Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was in agreement with my Lord in three matters. One was performing prayer at the Station of Ibrahim (when I suggested, O Messenger of Allah! Make this place a place of prayer, and it was revealed in the Qur’an as such), the second was regarding the veiling of women, and the third was regarding the captives of Badr.
`Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, the well-known hypocrite, died, his son Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Abdullah bin Ubayy, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and requested, "O Messenger of Allah, please give your shirt for my father's shroud." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it. Then he said, "Please lead the funeral prayer for him." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray over him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) held onto the garment of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will you pray over him even though Allah has forbidden you to pray over him?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah has given me the choice: 'Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them' (At-Tawbah: 80). So I will ask more than seventy times." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Indeed, he was a hypocrite." Yet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over him. Then the verse was revealed: "Do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave" (At-Tawbah: 84). (Thus, Allah approved the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.)
Virtues of Uthman ibn Affan.
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying in his house with his thighs or shins uncovered, when suddenly Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission in that state and continued talking with him. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission, and he was also allowed in the same state, and they continued talking. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat up and arranged his clothes. Then he came in and they talked. (The narrator Muhammad says: I do not say that the coming of all three happened on the same day.) When he left, Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, you did not pay any attention, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and you still did not pay any attention, but when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, you sat up and arranged your clothes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Should I not feel shy before a man before whom even the angels feel shy?
Saeed bin Musayyib says that Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that he performed ablution in his house, then went out. Abu Musa says: I said, "Today I will not leave the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) all day; I will stay with him." He says: Then I came to the mosque and inquired about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people said that he had gone out in that direction. So I followed in the footsteps of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept asking people about him. While walking, I found out that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had gone into a garden at the place of Aris. I sat near the door, which was made of palm branches, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished relieving himself and had performed ablution, then I walked towards him. I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting on the edge of the well of Aris, with both his shins uncovered and dangling in the well. So I greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then returned to sit near the door. I said (to myself): Today I will be the doorkeeper/guard of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and pushed the door. I asked, "Who is it?" He said, "Abu Bakr." I said, "Wait a moment." Then I went and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr seeks permission to enter." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise." I came and told Abu Bakr, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given you glad tidings of Paradise." So Abu Bakr entered and sat on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the same edge, with both his legs dangling and his shins uncovered, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting. I returned and sat down again, and I had left my brother (Amir) performing ablution at home. I said, "If Allah wills good for so-and-so (i.e., my brother), He will bring him here." Meanwhile (what do I see but) someone started shaking the door. I asked, "Who is it?" The reply came, "Umar bin Khattab." I said, "Wait." Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), greeted him, and said, "Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to enter." He said, "Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise." So I went and said, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given you glad tidings of Paradise." So he also entered and sat on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the same edge, and both his legs were dangling in the well. Then I returned and sat (at the door). I said, "If Allah wills good for so-and-so (Amir), He will bring him here." Meanwhile, another man shook the door. I said, "Who is it?" He replied, "Uthman bin Affan." I said, "Wait." Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, so he said, "Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise, but he will be afflicted with a calamity." I came and said to him, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given you glad tidings of Paradise, but with a trial that will befall you." So he also entered and saw that a part of the edge was filled, so he sat on the other side, facing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Shareek said that Saeed bin Musayyib said: I derived from this hadith that their graves would also be in this order. (And so it happened that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did not find a place in that chamber, so he was buried in Baqi' in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
