Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Nearness of tribulations and destruction when evil prevails.
Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up from sleep in a state that he was saying:“La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah), woe to the Arabs from an evil that has drawn near! Today a hole has been opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog like this,”and (the narrator of the hadith) Sufyan made a circle with his thumb and index finger (to show the size). I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Will we be destroyed while there are righteous people among us?”He (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Yes, when evil becomes prevalent (i.e., immorality, fornication, children born out of wedlock, or acts of disobedience).”
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: "Today, so much has opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog (i.e., such a hole has been made in it)," and (the narrator of the hadith) Wahib described this by making the figure of ninety with his fingers. (Perhaps this hadith is from before and after Umm al-Mu'mineen Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), and perhaps the intention is to give an example, not to specify a limit.)
Trials descending like raindrops.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) climbed upon one of the quarters (or forts) of Madinah, then said: "Do you see what I am seeing? Indeed, I see the places of tribulations in your houses just as I see the places where rain falls."
Trials presented to hearts and their effect.
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he said: Who among you has heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mention tribulations (fitan)? Some people said: Yes! We have heard. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Perhaps you think of those tribulations which befall a man regarding his family, wealth, and neighbor? They said: Yes. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The expiation for those tribulations is through prayer, fasting, and charity, but who among you has heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about those tribulations which will surge like the waves of the sea? Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people fell silent, so I said: I have heard. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have heard, your father was very good. (This is a supplicatory phrase used by the Arabs.) Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he used to say: Tribulations will be presented to the hearts one after another, just like the sticks of a mat are placed one after another. Then, whichever heart absorbs the tribulation, a black spot will be marked in it, and whichever heart rejects it, a white, luminous spot will be marked in it, until the hearts become of two kinds: one pure white like a polished stone, which no tribulation will harm as long as the heavens and the earth remain; the other black, mixed with whiteness, or like an upturned vessel, which will neither recognize good nor reject evil, except what is absorbed by its own desires. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I narrated to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the hadith that between you and that tribulation there is a closed door, but it is near that it will be broken. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May your father not be (this is also a phrase commonly used by the Arabs to warn or alert someone), will it be broken? If it were opened, perhaps it could be closed again. I said: No, it will be broken. And I narrated to him the hadith that this door is a person who will be killed or will die. Then this hadith was not a mistake (not something made up from the heart). Abu Khalid said: I asked Sa'id bin Tariq, what is meant by "aswad murbad"? He said: Intense whiteness in blackness. I said: What is meant by "kal-kuz mujahkhiya"? He said: An overturned vessel.
Satan sends his troops to cause tribulation.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Iblis places his throne upon water, then sends his armies to spread corruption in the world. The one who causes the greatest trial is the closest to him. One of the devils comes and says, "I made so-and-so do such-and-such" (meaning, I made someone steal, made someone drink alcohol, etc.), so Iblis says, "You have done nothing." Then another comes and says, "I did not leave so-and-so until I separated him from his wife." So Iblis brings him close and says, "Yes, you have done a great thing." A‘mash said, "I think he embraces him."
About trials and their nature.
Abu Idris Khawlani says that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I know every tribulation that will occur between me and the Day of Resurrection more than anyone else. And it is not that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told me something secretly that he did not tell others, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the tribulations in a gathering in which I was also present. So, while counting those tribulations, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three of them are such that they will leave almost nothing untouched, and some of them are like the hot winds, some are small and some are big. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (Now) all the people of that gathering have passed away except me. I am the only one remaining (and for this reason, now there is no one left who knows more about the tribulations than me).
`Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah stood among us (to deliver a sermon) and did not leave out anything that was to happen from that time until the Day of Resurrection except that he mentioned it. Then, whoever remembered it, remembered it, and whoever forgot it, forgot it. My companions know it, and sometimes there is a matter which I had forgotten, but when I see it, I remember it, just as a man remembers another man's face in his absence, and then when he sees him, he recognizes him.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me of everything that would happen until the Day of Resurrection, and there was nothing left that I did not ask him about, except that I did not ask what thing would expel the people of Madinah from Madinah.
Sayyiduna Abu Zaid (that is, Amr bin Akhtab) رضي الله عنه says: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم led us in the Fajr prayer and then ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon to us until the time for Dhuhr came. Then he descended and performed the prayer. Then he ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon to us until the time for Asr came. Then he descended and performed the prayer. Then he ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon to us until the sun set. Thus, he informed us of everything that had happened and everything that was going to happen. And the most knowledgeable among us is the one who remembered those things the most.
On trials and those who are safe or remember them.
Muhammad (Ibn Sirin) says that Jundub said: On the day of Al-Jar‘ah (that is, the day when turmoil was about to occur at Jar‘ah, and Jar‘ah is a place in Kufa where the people of Kufa gathered to fight Sa‘id bin ‘As when Sayyiduna ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, had sent him as the governor of Kufa), I saw a man sitting and said, "Today, there will be much bloodshed here." That man replied, "Never! By Allah, there will be no bloodshed." I said, "By Allah, there will surely be bloodshed." He said, "By Allah, there will never be bloodshed." I said, "By Allah, there will surely be killing." He said, "By Allah, there will never be killing, and I have heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which he told me." I said, "Today you are a bad companion for me, because you hear me opposing you and you have heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and you do not stop me." Then I said, "What is the use of this anger?" And I turned towards that man and inquired, and it turned out that he was Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, a companion of the Messenger of Allah.
