Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and for two years of the leadership/caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), three divorces were counted as only one divorce. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You were commanded to be patient and forbearing regarding divorce, but you hastened in your forbearance, so we have enforced your hastiness upon you."

It is narrated from Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abu As-Sahba said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): Present something from your words—were not three divorces counted as one during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)? The matter was like that. When the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, people began to give divorce without thinking, so he enforced it upon them.

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: We participated with Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the funeral of the noble wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Maymunah, at the place of Saraf. He said: This is the noble wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so when you lift her body, do not shake it, do not jolt it, and be gentle. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had nine pure wives; he had assigned turns for eight of them, but had not assigned a turn for one. Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We found out that the one for whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not assigned a turn was Lady Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (may Allah be pleased with her).
