Chapter: The Man is a Shepherd Over His Family
Hadith Number: 212
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All of you are shepherds, and each of you will be questioned about his flock. The ruler is a shepherd and will be questioned about his subjects. A man is a shepherd over the members of his household and will be questioned about them. A woman is a shepherd over her husband's house and will be questioned about it. Beware! Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you will be questioned about his flock."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sulaiman Malik bin Huwairith (may Allah be pleased with him) that we came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while we were young men of similar age. We stayed with him for twenty nights, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) realized that we had become homesick for our families. So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked us about our families—who among us had whom? We informed him. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was very gentle and kind. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Return to your families and teach them, and command them (to act upon Islamic rulings), and pray as you have seen me praying. When the time for prayer comes, let one of you give the call to prayer (adhan), and let the eldest among you lead the prayer."

Chapter: The Woman is a Shepherdess
Hadith Number: 214
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Each of you is a shepherd and each of you will be questioned about his flock. The ruler is a shepherd and will be questioned about his subjects. A man is a shepherd over the members of his household, and a woman is a shepherd over her husband's house, and a servant is a shepherd over his master's wealth." I heard these words from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I think the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: "And a man is a shepherd over his father's house."

Chapter: Whoever is Shown Kindness Should Recompense It
Hadith Number: 215
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is shown kindness should repay it. If he has nothing with which to repay it, then he should at least say good words in praise of the one who did the kindness. Thus, whoever has said good words has expressed gratitude for it, and whoever conceals that kindness has shown ingratitude. And whoever displays a quality for himself which he does not possess has put on two garments of falsehood."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), who reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he was asked: "Which deed is the best among deeds?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "To have faith in Allah, and to strive (do jihad) in His way." It was asked: "Which slave is best to set free?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "The one whose price is highest and who is most valued by his owners." The questioner asked: "If I am not able to do some of these deeds, then what do you instruct me to do?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "Then help someone who is working or do work for someone who is unskilled or incapable." The questioner asked: "If I become too weak to do even this?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "Then restrain yourself from harming people (and do not cause them trouble); this will be a charity from you upon yourself."
