Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she used to say: There are good poems and bad poems. Take the good poems and leave the bad ones. I have narrated many poems from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). Among them is a qasida which contains forty verses, and there are others as well.

It is narrated from Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) that I asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite any poetry? She replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite as an example some verses from the poetry of Abdullah bin Rawahah: "He will bring you news of what you have not prepared for."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aswad bin Sari’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he states: I was a poet, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have expressed the praise and glorification of my Lord (in poetry). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Why not, indeed your Lord loves praise.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say anything more to me than this.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shuraid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me to recite the poetry of Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt, and I recited poetry to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Recite more, recite more." Until I had recited one hundred verses, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was close to becoming a Muslim."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the command of Allah Almighty: «وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ ۝ أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ ۝ وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ ۝ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا» [الشعراء: 224-227] has been abrogated by Allah Almighty, and the believers have been exempted from it, and He said: "Except for those who believe (and do good deeds and remember Allah abundantly...) they are to return."

Umar bin Salam (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Abdul Malik bin Marwan entrusted his son to Imam Shabi (may Allah have mercy on him) so that he could teach him manners, and also said: Teach him poetry so that he may become dignified and great, and feed him meat so that his heart may become strong, and keep cutting his hair so that his neck may become strong, and also make him sit with elders so that he may be able to debate with them.
