Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) had a spear. Whenever we set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for any expedition, he would take that spear with him. He would fix it in the ground, and when people passed by, they would pick it up and hand it to him. Seeing this, I thought in my heart that when I reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I will definitely inform him of this whole situation. (So when I mentioned it,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“If you start doing this, then no lost item will be picked up to be returned to its owner.”
