Abdullah bin Sa’idi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to a place to collect Zakat. When I finished and presented myself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and handed over the wealth to him, he ordered that I be given a salary. I submitted,“I did this work for the pleasure of Allah, and He alone will reward me for it.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“Whatever is given to you, take it, because during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I also performed this service once. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me some wealth, and I said the same thing as you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘If wealth comes to you without your desire and request, then take it and use it; otherwise, give it in charity.’”
