Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) once arrived in Makkah with the intention of performing ‘Umrah and became the guest of Umayyah bin Khalaf Abu Safwan. It was also Umayyah’s habit that when he would pass through Madinah on his way to Syria, he would become the guest of Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). Anyway! Umayyah said to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him),“Wait a little, when the day is fully bright and people become heedless, then you may go and perform Tawaf.”When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) was performing Tawaf, suddenly Abu Jahl arrived and said,“Who is this person performing Tawaf of the Ka’bah?”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied,“I am Sa’d.”Abu Jahl said,“You are performing Tawaf so peacefully even though you have given refuge to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions?”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied,“Yes! We have given them refuge.”Upon this, a dispute started between the two. Umayyah bin Khalaf said to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him),“Do not raise your voice over Abu’l-Hakam, that is, Abu Jahl, for he is the chief of this area.”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“By Allah! If you stop me from performing Tawaf, I will block your trade route to Syria.”Umayyah kept insisting,“Do not raise your voice,”and kept restraining him. At this, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said,“Get out of our way, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say about you that they will kill you.”Umayyah asked,“Me?”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied,“Yes!”Umayyah said,“By Allah! Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) never lies.”Anyway! When they left, Umayyah went to his wife and said,“Do you know what this Yathribi said to me?”Then he told his wife the whole incident. Meanwhile, when the caller came and people began to set out for Badr, Umayyah’s wife said to him,“Do you not remember what your Yathribi friend said to you?”At this, Umayyah decided not to go, but Abu Jahl said to him,“You are a noble man of our area, come with us for a day or two.”So he went with them, and Allah caused him to be killed.
