Hazrat Khalid bin Samrah narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Rabah Ansari came to us... and the Ansar companions considered him a jurist, so he said: Abu Qatadah, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), told us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched the army of commanders (the army of the Battle of Mu'tah) and said: "Zaid bin Harithah will be your leader. If he is killed, then Ja'far bin Abi Talib will be your leader, and if he is also killed, then Abdullah bin Rawahah will be your leader." Hazrat Ja'far jumped up and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I do not fear that you have appointed Zaid over me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let it be! You do not know what good is in them."
2. Then these people set out and remained there as long as Allah willed. Then (one day) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit and ordered, and it was announced: "As-Salat Jami'ah." So the people gathered before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Good news has come, good news has come." He said this three times... "I will inform you about the army that went to fight. They set out and met the enemy (and fought). Hazrat Zaid was killed as a martyr. Seek forgiveness for him. Then the flag was taken by Hazrat Ja'far bin Abi Talib, and he attacked the enemy fiercely until he too was killed as a martyr. Bear witness to his martyrdom and seek forgiveness for him. Then the flag was taken by Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah, and he stood firm, but eventually, he too was martyred. Seek forgiveness for him. Then (after them) the flag was taken by Hazrat Khalid bin Walid, although he was not among the (previously appointed) commanders (rather) he appointed himself as the commander." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah! Khalid is one of Your swords, so help him." From that day, Hazrat Khalid bin Walid was called Saifullah al-Maslul (the Drawn Sword of Allah). And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go out and help your brothers. None of you should stay behind." So the companions set out on foot and on horseback, and it was a time of intense heat.
3. One night, the companions were off the path when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became drowsy until he leaned to one side from his saddle. So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and supported him with my hand. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt the touch of the hand of the one straightening him, he asked: "Who is this person?" I replied: "Abu Qatadah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued, and again he became drowsy until he leaned to one side from his saddle. I (again) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and supported him with my hand. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt the touch of the hand of the one straightening him, he asked: "Who is this person?" I replied: "Abu Qatadah." The narrator says: On the second or third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I think I have put you to hardship tonight." The narrator says: I replied: "Never! May my parents be sacrificed for you. I see that sleep or drowsiness has put you in hardship. So if you move aside and camp so that your sleep may be completed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that the people may be left behind." The narrator says: I replied: "Never! May my parents be sacrificed for you."
4. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then look for a secluded place for us." The narrator says: I got off the path and suddenly saw a cluster of trees. So I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is a cluster of trees..."
