Chapter on Those Whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) Named and Whose Names He Changed for a Benefit
Hadith Number: 4760
عن علي رضي الله عنه قال لما ولد الحسن سميته حربا فجاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فقال اروني ابني ما سميتموه قال قلت حربا قال بل هو حسن فلما ولد الحسين سميته حربا فجاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فقال اروني ابني ما سميتموه قال قلت حربا قال بل هو حسين فلما ولد الثالث سميته حربا فجاء النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فقال اروني ابني ما سميتموه قلت حربا قال بل هو محسن ثم قال سميتهم باسماء ولد هارون شبر وشبير ومشبر
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: When Hasan was born, I named him Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. He said: No, rather his name is Hasan. Then when Husayn was born, I named him Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No, rather his name is Husayn. When the third child was born, I named him Harb. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came and said: Show me my son, what name have you given him? I said: Harb. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No, rather he is Muhsin. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have named these children after the names of the children of Harun, peace be upon him. Their names were: Shabbir, Shabbir, and Mushabbir.
