Hadith Number: 8244
Hilal bin Yasaf narrates from a man of the family of Khalid bin Urfutah, who says: I was on a journey with Sayyiduna Salim bin Ubaid. A man sneezed and said, "As-Salamu Alaikum." Salim bin Ubaid replied to him, "Peace be upon you and your mother." Then he walked on and said to the one who sneezed, "Perhaps you are upset?" He replied, "I did not intend for you to mention my mother here (what you did was inappropriate)." He said, "But there was no other way except to say this, because I was on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man sneezed and said, 'As-Salamu Alaikum,' and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him, 'Peace be upon you and your mother.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you sneezes, he should say, 'Alhamdulillah ala kulli hal' or 'Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alamin.' The listener should reply to him, 'Yarhamukallah,' and the one who sneezed should then say, 'Yaghfirullahu li wa lakum' (May Allah forgive me and you)."
