Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever is afflicted by a calamity should recite this supplication:“Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we shall return. O Allah! I seek the reward of my calamity in Your presence, so grant me its reward and grant me a better substitute in place of what has been lost.”Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, I recited this supplication and I said: O Allah, grant me better than him. Then I thought, who could be better than Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him)? When Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) completed her waiting period (‘iddah), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent her a marriage proposal, but she did not marry Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent her a marriage proposal, but she did not marry Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) either. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to her with his proposal. She said: Inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I am a woman with a temper and I am a woman afflicted by calamity (i.e., I have become a widow), and none of my guardians are present here. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Go back to her and say: As for your saying that you are a woman with a temper, I will supplicate to Allah Almighty to remove your temper. As for your saying that you are a woman afflicted by calamity (i.e., you have become a widow), your children will suffice for you. And as for your saying that none of your guardians are present here, none of your guardians, whether present or absent, will dislike this. So Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her son: O Umar! Get up and marry me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So he married her to him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her house to spend the night. When Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), she took her daughter Zaynab and seated her in her lap. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) then left. This news reached Sayyiduna Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), who was her foster brother. He came to Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Where is the girl because of whom you caused discomfort to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then he took the girl and took her with him. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came again, looked around the corners of the house, and asked: What did you do with Zaynab? Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him: Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and took the girl with him. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) spent the night at Sayyida Umm Salamah’s (may Allah be pleased with her) house. He said: I will not reduce anything from what I have given to such-and-such (wife). There are two mills, two bags, and a mattress filled with leaves. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I stay with you for seven days, I will also stay with the other wives for seven days. Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The wording of the chain is narrated by Ibrahim ibn Hajjaj and the wording of the text is narrated by Yazid ibn Harun.
