Chapter on Companionship and Sitting – The Prophet’s analogy of a good companion to a perfume seller, whose scent rubs off even if you get nothing else
Hadith Number: 579
اخبرنا عمر بن محمد الهمداني ، قال: حدثنا عبد الجبار بن العلاء ، قال: حدثنا سفيان ، عن بريد بن عبد الله ، عن جده ، عن ابي موسى ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " مثل الجليس الصالح مثل العطار، إن لم يصبك منه، اصابك ريحه، ومثل الجليس السوء مثل القين، إن لم يحرقك بشرره، علق بك من ريحه" .
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a good companion is like that of a perfume seller; even if you do not buy anything from him, his fragrance will still reach you. And the example of a bad companion is like that of a blacksmith; even if he does not burn you with his sparks, his foul smell will still reach you."
