Malik bin Aws bin Hadthan says: I went to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and at that time, Uthman bin Affan, Zubair bin Awwam, Abdur Rahman bin Awf, and Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them) also arrived. Then Ali and Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came while disputing. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: I ask you by Allah, by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“We (i.e., the Prophets) have no heirs; whatever we leave behind is charity”? The people said: Yes! Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then you came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), seeking your share from the inheritance of your nephew, and this one (came) seeking the inheritance of her father for his wife. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“We (i.e., the Prophets) have no heirs; whatever we leave behind is charity.”(Umar [may Allah be pleased with him] said) Allah knows best, Abu Bakr was truthful, righteous, good, and a follower of the truth.
