Sleeping through the prayer
Hadith Number: 24
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned from the Battle of Khaybar, he traveled at night. When the last part of the night came, he (peace be upon him) dismounted and said to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): "Take care of the morning prayer." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) slept, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed awake as long as Allah willed. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) leaned against his camel and turned his face towards the direction of the morning, and his eyes became heavy with sleep. Neither the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) nor Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) nor any of the camel riders woke up, until the heat of the sun struck them. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) woke up startled and said: "What is this, O Bilal!" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The same thing overpowered me that overpowered you (i.e., sleep)." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Move on." So the people loaded their saddles. After traveling a short distance, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the call to prayer. So Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the call to prayer, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led the morning prayer. After he had finished the prayer, he said: "Whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when he remembers it, for Allah the Exalted says: 'Establish the prayer when you remember Me.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam that during the night, on the way to Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stopped and appointed Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to wake them up for prayer. But Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) fell asleep, and the people also slept. Then they woke up and the sun had risen, and the people became anxious (because the prayer had been missed). So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered them to mount so that they could leave that valley, and said: "There is a devil in this valley." So they mounted and left that valley. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered them to dismount and perform ablution, and ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the adhan or the takbir. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led the prayer with all the people. Then he turned towards the people and saw their anxiety, so he said: "O people! Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has taken hold of our souls, and if He had willed, He would have returned our souls at another time besides this. So, when any of you sleeps through the prayer or forgets it, then when he wakes up anxiously for the prayer, he should pray it as he would pray it at its time." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Satan came to Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was standing and praying, and made him lie down, then began to pat him as a child is patted, until he fell asleep." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) described his condition just as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness to this matter that you (peace be upon him) are the Messenger of Allah.
