خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى
The best charity is that given from surplus wealth
Hadith Number: 1227
1227 - اخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن عمر الصفار، ابنا احمد بن إبراهيم بن جامع، ثنا علي بن عبد العزيز، ثنا ابو نعيم، ثنا عمرو، يعني ابن عثمان، قال: سمعت موسى بن طلحة، يذكر عن حكيم بن حزام، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «خير الصدقة عن ظهر غنى، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وابدا بمن تعول»
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity and kindness) with those whom you support."

1228 - اخبرنا ابو الحسن علي بن موسى السمسار بدمشق، ثنا ابو زيد محمد بن احمد المروزي، ابنا محمد بن يوسف الفربري، ثنا محمد بن إسماعيل البخاري، ثنا موسى بن إسماعيل، ثنا وهيب، ثنا هشام، عن ابيه، عن حكيم بن حزام، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وابدا بمن تعول، وخير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى، ومن يستعفف يعفه الله، ومن يستغن يغنه الله»
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity and alms) with those whom you support, and the best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient. And whoever seeks to be saved, Allah will save him, and whoever seeks to be independent, Allah will make him independent."

Hadith Number: 1229
1229 - وانا منير بن احمد، نا الحسن بن مسلم الطرائفي، انا محمد بن عبد الله بن عبد الحكم، نا انس بن عياض، عن هشام، عن ابيه، عن حكيم بن حزام، انه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وليبدا احدكم بمن يعول، وخير الصدقة ما كان عن ظهر غنى، ومن يستعفف يعفه الله، ومن استغنى اغناه الله»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and each of you should begin (charity and alms) with those whom he supports, and the best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient. Whoever seeks to be saved, Allah will save him, and whoever seeks to be independent, Allah will make him independent."

Hadith Number: 1230
1230 - وانا ابو الحسن احمد بن حامد بن محمود بن ثرثال، انا ابو عبد الله الحسين بن إسماعيل المحاملي، نا محمد بن عثمان بن كرامة، نا خالد، نا سليمان، حدثني عبد الله بن دينار، عن ابن عمر، قال: قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «اليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

Hadith Number: 1231
1231 - اناه عبد الرحمن بن عمر، انا حمزة بن محمد، نا النسائي، انا قتيبة، عن مالك، عن نافع، عن عبد الله، مثل حديث ابن ثرثال
This hadith is also narrated in the same manner from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) through another chain of transmission.

1232 - انا محمد بن الحسين النيسابوري، انا الحسن بن رشيق، نا احمد بن محمد بن عبد العزيز، نا يحيى بن بكير، حدثني ابن لهيعة، عن الاعرج، عن ابي هريرة، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «خير الصدقة ما تصدق به عن ظهر غنى، واليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى، وابدا بمن تعول»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that indeed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best charity is that which is given when a person is still wealthy after giving it, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start (charity) with those whom you support."
