It is narrated from Ibrahim, may Allah have mercy on him, that if a slave is jointly owned between two people and one of them frees his share, then if he has wealth, he will be liable to his partner, and if he does not have wealth, the slave will strive to pay the remaining price for his freedom.

Hazrat Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked Sulaiman bin Yasar a question. He replied in the same manner. I said, "But he is young." He said, "This is the Sunnah."

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if a person frees his share in a slave, then he has a share in it, so he will be responsible for the remaining share as well if he is wealthy, and if he is not wealthy, then the slave himself will strive for the remaining price.

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah that if a slave is jointly owned by two people and one of them frees his share, then he will be responsible for his companion's share.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aamir that a slave was jointly owned by two men. One of them freed his share. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The slave has become completely free. If he does not possess wealth, he should strive to pay the remaining half of the price. And the right of inheritance (wala) of the slave will go to the one who set him free.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Majliz (may Allah be pleased with him) that a slave was shared between two men. One of them freed his share. He (may Allah be pleased with him) withheld him until he sold one of his small goats in exchange for his share.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) say that if a slave is owned between two men and one of them frees his share, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The portion freed will be considered free from the wealth of the one who freed it, and at the time of freeing, he will be liable to his partner for the value of the slave.
