On Selling Goldsmiths' Dust

٢٣٣٣٢ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا حفص عن حجاج عن عطاء انه كان يكره تراب (الصواغين) (١) يعني شراءه.

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked the sale of the goldsmith's clay (the clay of the jeweler).

٢٣٣٣٣ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابو اسامة عن هشام عن الحسن انه كان يكره شراء تراب الصواغين إلا ان يشتري تراب الذهب بالفضة، وتراب الفضة بالذهب.
Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) disliked the sale of goldsmith’s dust, except that gold dust be sold with silver and silver dust be sold with gold.

٢٣٣٣٤ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن محمد بن ابي الجعد قال: سالت الشعبي عن شراء تراب الصواغين فكرهه وقال: هو غرر.
Hazrat Muhammad bin Abu Ja'd says that I asked Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) about buying the clay of a goldsmith. He disliked its sale and said, "This is deception." Hazrat Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) says, "My father used to sell it in exchange for something present (i.e., hand to hand sale)."

23335 - Muhammad said: And my father's clarification: (he buys it) (1) with goods.

٢٣٣٣٦ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا حرمي بن (عمارة) (١) عن شعبة عن حماد عن إبراهيم قال: لا باس ان يشتري تراب (الذهب) (٢) بالفضة وتراب الفضة بالذهب.

Ibrahim says, there is no harm in selling gold dust for silver and selling silver dust for gold.
