What to Say When Wearing New Clothes

٢٦٧١٨ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن ابن ابي ليلى عن اخيه عيسى عن عبد الرحمن بن ابي ليلى قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ:"إذا لبس احدكم ثوبا جديدا فليقل: الحمد لله الذي كساني ما اواري به عورتي، واتجمل به في الناس" (١).

(١) مرسل ضعيف؛ ابن أبي ليلى هو محمد سيئ الحفظ، ووالده عبد الرحمن تابعي، أخرجه ابن سعد ١/ ٤٦٠.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila. He says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When any of you puts on new clothes, he should say: All praise is for Allah who has clothed me with this (garment) by which I cover my private parts and by which I attain beauty among people."

٢٦٧١٩ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: اخبرنا اصبغ بن زيد قال: حدثنا ابو العلاء عن ابي امامة قال: لبس عمر بن الخطاب ثوبا جديدا فقال: ⦗٥٤⦘ الحمد لله الذي كساني ما اواري به عورتي، واتجمل به في حياتي، ثم قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول:"من لبس ثوبا جديدا فقال: الحمد لله الذي كساني ما اواري به عورتي، واتجمل به في حياتي، ثم (عمد) (١) إلى الثوب الذي (اخلق) (٢) او قال: القى فتصدق به كان في كنف الله وفي حفظ الله وفي ستر الله حيا وميتا"، قالها: ثلاثا (٣).

(٣) مجهول؛ لجهالة أبي العلاء، أخرجه أحمد (٣٠٥)، والترمذي (٣٥٦٠)، وابن ماجه (٣٥٥٧)، والحاكم ٤/ ١٩٣، والطبراني في الدعاء (٣٩٣)، والمزني ٣٤/ ١٥٧، وابن المبارك في مسنده (٢٢)، وعبد بن حميد (١٨)، والبيهقي في الشعب (٦٢٨٧)، وهناد في الزهد (٦٥٦)، وابن السني في عمل اليوم والليلة (٢٧٢)، وابن أبي الدنيا في الشكر (٧٥).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah. He says that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab wore a new garment and said: All praise is due to Allah who has clothed me with this garment by which I cover my private parts and by which I attain beauty in my life. Then he said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever wears a new garment and says: 'All praise is due to Allah who has clothed me with that by which I cover my nakedness and by which I adorn myself in my life,' then takes his old, removed garment and gives it in charity, that person will remain in Allah's mercy, protection, and covering—both in life and after death." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.

٢٦٧٢٠ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن إدريس عن ابي الاشهب عن رجل من (مزينة) (١) ان رسول الله ﷺ راى على عمر ثوبا غسيلا فقال:"اجديد ثوبك هذا؟" قال: غسيل يا رسول الله قال: فقال له رسول الله ﷺ:"البس جديدا، وعش حميدا، وتوف شهيدا، يعطك الله قرة عين في الدنيا والآخرة" (٢).

(١) في [ح، ط]: (رمنة).
(٢) منقطع؛ أبو الأشهب لا يروي عن أحد من الصحابة، أخرجه ابن سعد ٣/ ٣٢٩، والدولابي في الكنى ١/ ١٠٩، وبنحوه البخاري في الأوسط ٢/ ٣٨.
A man from the tribe of Muzainah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a washed garment on Umar. So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, "Is this garment of yours new?" Umar replied, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! It is washed." The narrator says that upon this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Umar: "Wear new clothes, live a praiseworthy life, and die the death of a martyr. May Allah grant you the coolness of the eye in this world and the Hereafter."

٢٦٧٢١ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا حسين (بن) (١) علي عن ابي وهب عن منصور عن (٢) سالم بن ابي الجعد قال: إذا لبس الإنسان (الثوب) (٣) ⦗٥٥⦘ (الجديد) (٤) فقال: اللهم (اجعلها) (٥) ثيابا مباركة، نشكر فيها نعمتك، ونحسن فيها عبادتك، ونعمل فيها بطاعتك، لم يجاوز (ترقوته) (٦) حتى يغفر له.

(٤) سقط من: [ز].
(٥) في [ح]: (اجعلنا).

It is narrated from Hazrat Salim bin Abi Al-Ja'd. He says that when a person wears new clothes and then says: O Allah! Make this garment blessed for me, may we thank You for Your blessing in it, worship You well in it, and obey You in it. Then this garment does not go below the neck until that person's forgiveness is granted.

٢٦٧٢٢ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن علية عن الجريري (عن) (١) ابي نضرة قال: كان اصحاب النبي ﷺ إذا راوا على احدهم الثوب الجديد قالوا: تبلي ويخلف الله (عليك) (٢) (٣).
ريفرينس و تحكيم الحدیث:
(١) سقط في: [ز].
(٢) سقط من: [جـ].
(٣) صحيح.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Nadrah. He says that when the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a new garment on any one of them, they would say: "Tubli, wa yukhlifu Allahu 'alayk." (May you wear it out, and may Allah grant you more after it.)

٢٦٧٢٣ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا (ابن علية عن) (١) الجريري عن ابي نضرة قال: إنما نعيش في (الخلف) (٢).

(٢) في [ط، هـ]: (الخلق).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Nazrah. He says, "We live our lives in old clothes."

٢٦٧٢٤ - حدثنا ابو بكر قال: حدثنا محمد بن بشر قال: حدثنا مسعر قال: حدثنا عون بن عبد الله قال: لبس رجل ثوبا جديدا، فحمد الله فادخل الجنة او غفر له قال: فقال رجل: لا ارجع إلى اهلي حتى البس ثوبا جديدا واحمد الله عليه.
Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah narrates: He says that a man wore new clothes and praised Allah Almighty, so he was admitted to Paradise… or he said… he was forgiven. The narrator says: Upon this, a man said, "I will not return to my family until I wear new clothes and praise Allah for them."
