Hazrat Muhammad bin Sawqah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that a man asked Hazrat Ata, may Allah have mercy on him, about a person who had been taken captive by the people of Daylam. They released him after taking an oath and covenant from him by Allah that if he sent them ransom, he would be free. They had fixed the amount of ransom. And if he did not send the ransom, then according to the oath and covenant, he would return to them. That person could not obtain the ransom money because he was poor. Now what should he do? He, may Allah have mercy on him, replied: He must fulfill the promise. The man said: Hazrat, they are polytheists! Hazrat Ata, may Allah have mercy on him, refused and said: In every case, fulfilling the promise is necessary.

Hazrat Jami’ bin Abi Rashid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Maymun bin Mehran (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Three things are to be fulfilled for both the righteous and the wicked. Ties of kinship should be maintained, whether the person is righteous or wicked. Trusts should be returned to both the righteous and the wicked. And promises should be fulfilled to both the righteous and the wicked.

Hazrat Abu Tufail (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Nothing prevented me from participating in the Battle of Badr except that I and my father Haseel (may Allah have mercy on him) had set out when the disbelievers of Quraysh caught us and said, "You are going to Muhammad." So we said, "We are not going to him; our intention is only to go to Madinah." So they took a promise from us that we would return to Madinah and would not fight alongside Muhammad So we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of this incident. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Both of you return; we will also fulfill the promise made to them, and we will seek Allah's help against them."
