It is narrated about Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him): A polytheist mocked him and said, "I have noticed that your master has taught you everything, even the manners of relieving yourselves." Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Yes! The Messenger of Allah has instructed us that when we perform istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself), we should neither face nor turn our backs to the Qiblah, nor use the right hand for istinja, nor use less than three stones, and none of those stones should be a bone or dung."

This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.

It is narrated about Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him): Some polytheists said to him, "We have noticed that your master has taught you everything, even the manners of relieving yourselves." So Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Yes! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us that any one of us should clean himself with his right hand or face the Qiblah while relieving himself, and he has also forbidden us from cleaning ourselves with dung or bones. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'None of you should clean himself with less than three stones.' The chain of this hadith is 'Sahih' (authentic)."

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person goes to relieve himself, he should purify himself with three stones; doing so will suffice for him." The chain of this narration is "Hasan" (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself, and he instructed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Bring me three stones." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) brought two stones and a piece of dung. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) threw away the dung and said: "This is filth, bring stones." The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, according to which Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was walking with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed me: "Bring me three stones." The narrator states: I brought two stones and a piece of dung to him, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) put the dung aside and said: "This is filth, instead of this bring me something else (a stone)." In this narration, there is a disagreement regarding the narrator named Abu Ishaq. (Imam Daraqutni says:) I have clarified this disagreement elsewhere.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from performing istinja (purification) with bones, dung, or coal. The chain of this narration is Shami and it is not authentic.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from performing istinja (purification) with decayed bones, dung, or charcoal. The narrator of this narration, Ali bin Rabah, did not directly hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who was an Ansari, that he reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade using a bone, dung, or leather for istinja (purification after relieving oneself). The chain of this narration is not established. The narrator of this narration, Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman, is unknown.

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade using dung or bones for istinja (purification after relieving oneself). He said: "These two things do not purify." The chain of this narration is "Sahih" (authentic).

Abi bin Abbas narrates from his father, from his grandfather Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him): It was asked from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about the method of performing istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself), so he said:“Can you not find three stones? Two stones for cleaning the sides of the outlet, and one stone for cleaning the outlet itself.”Its chain of narration is“Hasan”(good).
