Abdullah bin Muhairiz (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: He was under the care of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he was about to be sent to Syria, he said: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him): Uncle! I am about to go to Syria, and I fear that I may not be able to ask you about your call to prayer (adhan). Please tell me about it. He replied: Yes! I went out with some people; we were on the road to Hunayn. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from Hunayn. On the way, we encountered your caravan. The Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mu’adhdhin gave the call to prayer. When we heard the mu’adhdhin’s adhan, we also loudly repeated those words, mocking it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the voice and summoned us. We were brought before him. He asked:“Who among you was the one whose voice was loud and I heard it?”Everyone pointed towards me. They spoke the truth. He let everyone else go and kept me back. He said:“Stand up and give the call to prayer!”I stood up, and at that moment, your command was the most disliked thing to me. I stood before you. You yourself taught me the method of adhan and said:“Recite this: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.”Then you said:“Recite it again and raise your voice.”Then you said:“Now recite this: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah.”When I completed the adhan, you called me and gave me a pouch in which there was a little silver. Then you placed your blessed hand on my forehead, then over my face, chest, and liver, until you reached my navel. Then you said:“May Allah bless you and bestow blessings upon you.”I permit you. At that time, the dislike I had for you in my heart disappeared and turned into love for you. Then I went to Sayyiduna ‘Attab bin Asid (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the governor appointed by you, and began to give the adhan under your command. Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard this narration from the descendants of Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), just as Ibn Muhairiz (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it to me. This narration has been transmitted by Rabi’ (may Allah have mercy on him), and these are his words.

Rabi’ reports: Imam Shafi’i has informed this: I met Ibrahim bin Abdul Aziz. He gave the call to prayer (adhan) in the same manner as Ibn Muhairiz has described. I heard him narrate, from his father, from Ibn Muhairiz, from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), regarding the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), a narration of the same meaning as that which Ibn Jurayj has reported. I heard him recite the iqamah, the words of which are as follows: I believe he narrated this iqamah in the same way as he narrated the incident of the adhan.

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Hunayn. I went behind him with ten men from Makkah. We heard those people giving the call to prayer (adhan), so we also stood up and began to give the adhan, mocking them. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have heard the adhan of a person among these people whose voice is very beautiful." Then he called us. Each of us gave the adhan separately. I gave the adhan last of all. He said: "Come forward!" Then he made me sit in front of him, passed his hand over my forehead, and prayed for me three times. Then he said: "Go and give the adhan at the House of Allah (the Ka'bah)." I said: "How, O Messenger of Allah?" So he taught me the method of adhan, just as the adhan is given nowadays: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah; Hayya 'ala-s-salah, Hayya 'ala-s-salah; Hayya 'ala-l-falah, Hayya 'ala-l-falah; Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; La ilaha illallah. In the first adhan of the morning, these words are used: "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm." He also taught me to say the words of iqamah twice: "Qad qamatis salah, qad qamatis salah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah."

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out with ten youths along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Hunayn. At that time, he was the most disliked person to us. We stood up and began to call the adhan, mocking him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring these youths to me." Then he said: "You all give the adhan!" They gave the adhan. He said: "Yes! This is the person whose adhan I heard. Go and give the adhan for the people of Makkah. Tell ‘Atab that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered that I give the adhan for the people of Makkah." Then he passed his hand over my forehead and said: "Say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah." These words are to be said twice. "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah." When you give the first adhan of the morning, say: "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm." When you say the iqamah, say these words twice: "Qad qamatis salah, qad qamatis salah." Have you heard this? The narrator states: Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) would not cut the hair of his forehead nor part it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed his hand over it.

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the words of the adhan: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah; Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah; Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah; Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; La ilaha illallah.
