Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the prayer was made obligatory, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and led him in the Zuhr prayer. After this, the narrator mentioned the timings of the prayers, in which these words are found: Jibreel (peace be upon him) led the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Regarding the next day, the narrator has transmitted the same words: He led the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is a beginning time for prayer and an ending time. The beginning time for Dhuhr is when the sun passes its zenith, and its ending time is when the time for Asr begins. The beginning time for Asr is when it starts, and its ending time is when the sun becomes yellow. The beginning time for Maghrib is when the sun sets, and its ending time is when the twilight disappears. The beginning time for Isha is when the twilight disappears, and its ending time is when half the night has passed. The beginning time for Fajr is when the true dawn appears, and its ending time is when the sun rises." This narration is not authentic as a musnad narration; other narrators have transmitted it as a mursal narration from Mujahid.

Mujahid says: It has been stated: "The prayer has a beginning time and an ending time." Then he mentioned this hadith. This narration is more authentic compared to the previously transmitted narration.

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Mujahid, from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), however, in it are these words: "The initial time of Asr is when the sun is bright until the time of Maghrib comes."

Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrates from his father that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the times of prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Pray with us for two days." The narrator states that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Bilal to give the call to prayer when the sun had declined, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him and he gave the iqamah, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer. Then he ordered him and he gave the iqamah for Asr while the sun was still high, bright, and shining. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him and he gave the iqamah for Maghrib when the sun had set. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Isha when the twilight had disappeared. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Fajr when the true dawn had appeared.
When the second day came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him to perform the Zuhr prayer at a cooler time, so he performed it at a cooler time. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him, so he gave the iqamah for Asr while the sun was still high, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed this prayer a little later than he had on the first day. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed him, so he gave the iqamah for Maghrib before the twilight had disappeared. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for Fajr when the light had spread. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Where is the person who asked about the times of prayer? The times of your prayers are between these two times which you have seen."

Abu Bakr bin Musa narrates from his father regarding this incident of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): A man came to him and asked about the times of the prayers. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give him any answer. He instructed Sayyiduna Bilal, so he gave the iqamah for the Fajr prayer at the time when true dawn had appeared, and at that time, due to darkness, no person could recognize another. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Zuhr prayer when the sun had declined, and a man would estimate whether midday had passed or not, though the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had more knowledge about it. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Asr prayer when the sun was still high. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Then, under the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Isha prayer when the twilight had disappeared.
Then, on the next day, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Fajr prayer, and when he finished the prayer, a man could say that the sun had risen or was about to rise. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Zuhr prayer until he performed it close to the time of the previous day's Asr prayer. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Asr prayer, and when the people finished the prayer, a man could say that the sun had turned red (i.e., the sunlight had faded). Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Maghrib prayer until it was performed shortly before the twilight disappeared. Then, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer so much that a third of the night had passed.
The next morning, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the man who had asked the question and said: "Between these two times is the time (for these prayers)."

Abu Bakr bin Abu Musa narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the prayers, but he did not give him any answer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), so he gave the iqamah for the morning prayer when the true dawn had appeared. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Maghrib prayer when the sun had set. Then, under the command of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he gave the iqamah for the Isha prayer when the twilight had disappeared.
The narrator states: The next day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Fajr prayer at a time when a person would think that the sun had risen or had not yet risen; however, the Prophet (peace be upon him) knew better about it. Then, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer at the same time as he had performed the Asr prayer on the previous day. When he performed the Asr prayer, a person would think that the sun had turned red, meaning the sunlight had faded. Then, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the Maghrib prayer shortly before the twilight had disappeared. Then, he performed the Isha prayer after one third of the night had passed. Then, he asked: "Where is the person who asked the question? Between these two times is the specific time for the prayers."
