Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Marry women only to suitable matches (kufu’), their marriage should only be conducted by their guardians, and the dowry should not be less than ten dirhams.”The narrator of this narration, Mubashir bin Ubaid, is abandoned in hadith; the narrations transmitted by him have not been corroborated.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The dowry should not be less than ten dirhams."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The dowry should not be less than ten dirhams."

Shu'bi says: "The dowry should not be less than ten dirhams."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The dowry should not be less than five dirhams."

It is narrated with another chain: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The dowry should not be less than ten dirhams."

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, may Allah have mercy on him): Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The dowry will be that upon which the husband and wife are mutually agreed."

Urwah narrates about Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her): She was first the wife of Abdullah bin Jahsh, who passed away. Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) had migrated to the land of Abyssinia, so the Negus married her to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) while she was residing among those people in Abyssinia. The narrator named Abdur Razzaq has reported this: Sayyida Umm Habibah’s (may Allah be pleased with her) first husband was Ubaydullah bin Jahsh, who died after becoming a Christian.

Urwah narrates about Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her): She was the wife of Ubaydullah bin Jahsh. Ubaydullah passed away in Abyssinia, so the Negus married Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and gave her four thousand dirhams as dowry on his behalf. Then he sent her to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (in Madinah Munawwarah) along with Sayyiduna Shurahbil bin Hasanah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ubaidullah Ashja'i narrates: I said to Sufyan, "Dawud has narrated from Sha'bi that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The dowry will not be less than ten dirhams.'" So Sufyan kept repeating, "Dawud, Dawud," as if he was rejecting him. I said, "Shu'bah has narrated traditions from him," so he struck his forehead with his hand and kept saying, "Dawud, Dawud."
