Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We traveled all night, until in the last part of the night we entered into such a state that no state is more beloved to a traveler—meaning, we fell asleep. The heat of the sun woke us up. The first to wake up was so-and-so, then so-and-so. Abu Raja (the narrator) used to mention their names, but his student Awf forgot them. After them, the fourth to wake up was Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The usual practice was that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asleep, we would not wake him until he woke up himself, because we did not know what state might be revealed to him during sleep. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up and observed the situation that had arisen among the people. He was a loud-voiced and brave man. He raised his voice, saying "Allahu Akbar," until his voice woke the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he woke up, the companions complained to him about what had happened to them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No problem, let us move on." After leaving from there, he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped a little further. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water for ablution, performed ablution, the call to prayer was given, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer and turned around, he saw a man sitting apart who had not prayed with the people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O so-and-so! What prevented you from praying with the people?" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah! I became junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) and there is no water available for bathing." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Use earth (i.e., perform tayammum with soil). That is sufficient for you." After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved on. The people complained of thirst. He (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man. The narrator of the hadith, Abu Raja, used to mention his name, but his student Awf forgot it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to both of them: "Go and search for water for us." Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) says: They both went off. They met a woman who was carrying two water skins on her camel. They asked her: "Where can we find water?" She replied: "Water is very far from here. I have been traveling with this water since this time yesterday and am still on the journey. Our men are not present." They said to her: "Alright, then come with us." She asked: "Where?" They said: "To the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "To that man who is called a Sabi (one who has left his religion and is irreligious)?" They said: "Yes, he is the one you think he is, so come along." They brought her to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident to him. The companions asked the woman to dismount. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel, opened the mouths of the water skins, and poured water into the vessel. It was announced among the people: "Drink and give your animals to drink." Whoever wanted to drink, drank, and whoever wanted to give their animals to drink, did so. In the end, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also gave a vessel of water to the man who was in a state of janabah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and pour this water over yourself, i.e., perform ghusl (ritual bath)." The woman stood watching all these scenes, seeing what was happening with her water. By Allah! When the woman was given permission to leave, it seemed to us as if her water skins were fuller than before. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather some provisions to give her." The companions gathered a good amount of Ajwa dates, flour, and sattu (roasted barley meal), etc., put it all in a cloth, and placed it in front of her on her camel. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "By Allah! You know that we have not diminished your water in the least. Allah, the Exalted, has provided us with water to drink." The woman returned to her people. She was quite late, so her family asked the reason for her delay. She told them that a strange incident had occurred. Two men met me. They took me to the man who is called a Sabi (irreligious and without faith). He did this with my water. She narrated the whole incident that had happened. She raised her middle and index fingers towards the sky and said: "By Allah! He is either the greatest magician among the people between the earth and the sky, or he is truly the Messenger of Allah." Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After that, the Muslims attacked the polytheists of that area, but they would not attack the tribe to which that woman belonged. One day, she said to her people: "I think these Muslims are deliberately sparing you. Will you not accept Islam?" So the people of the tribe accepted her advice and entered the fold of Islam.
