Sunan Saeed bin Mansur
كِتَابُ التَّفْسِيرِ
Book of Tafsir (Quranic Exegesis)
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ}
His saying, Exalted is He: {And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night.}
Hadith Number: 277
حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا هشيم ، قال: اخبرنا حصين ، عن الشعبي ، عن عدي بن حاتم ، قال: لما نزلت:" وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الابيض من الخيط الاسود سورة البقرة آية 187 عمدت إلى عقالين ابيض واسود، فجعلتهما تحت وسادتي، فجعلت اقوم الليل، فلا اتبين الابيض من الاسود، فلما اصبحت غدوت على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فاخبرته، فضحك، وقال:" إن وسادك لعريض، إنما ذاك سواد الليل وبياض النهار" .
Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When this verse was revealed:“And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread”(__QUR_N__), I took two threads, one white and one black, and placed them under my pillow. I stayed awake the whole night but could not distinguish between the white and black threads. In the morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned my difficulty. He laughed and said:“Your pillow is very wide; this refers to the whiteness of the dawn and the darkness of the night.”

Hadith Number: 278
حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا سفيان ، عن ابن ابي نجيح ، عن مجاهد ، في قوله عز وجل : حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الابيض من الخيط الاسود سورة البقرة آية 187، قال:" إذا تسحر الرجل وهو يرى ان عليه ليلا، وقد كان طلع الفجر، فليتم صومه، لان الله يقول: وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم سورة البقرة آية 187، وإذا اكل وهو يرى ان الشمس قد غابت ولم تغب، فليقضه، لان الله تعالى يقول: ثم اتموا الصيام إلى الليل سورة البقرة آية 187" .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding the verse of Allah, the Exalted: ﴿حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ﴾: When a person eats suhoor and thinks that it is still night while in fact the time of Fajr has passed, he should complete his fast, because Allah, the Exalted, has said: ﴿وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ﴾. And if he eats thinking that the sun has set, but in reality the sun has not set, then he should make up his fast, because Allah, the Exalted, has said: ﴿ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ﴾.

Hadith Number: 279
حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا هشيم ، قال: اخبرنا خالد ، ومنصور ، عن ابن سيرين ، عن يحيى بن الجزار ، قال: سئل ابن مسعود عن رجل تسحر وهو يرى ان عليه ليلا، وقد طلع الفجر، قال:" من اكل من اول النهار فلياكل آخره" ،
It was asked from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person eats suhoor and thinks that the night is still continuing, although Fajr has already begun. He replied: Whoever can eat at the beginning of the day, can also eat at the end of it.

Hadith Number: 280
حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا هشيم، قال: اخبرنا منصور، عن ابن سيرين، انه قال مثل ذلك، وقال الحسن:" يتم صومه ولا شيء عليه".
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He should complete his fast; there is no sin upon him.

Hadith Number: 281
حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا حدثنا سعيد، قال: اخبرنا عمر بن عبد الواحد السلمي ، من اهل دمشق، عن النعمان بن المنذر الغساني ، عن مكحول ، قال: سئل ابو سعيد الخدري عن رجل تسحر، وهو يرى ان عليه ليلا، وقد طلع عليه الفجر، قال:" إن كان من شهر رمضان صامه وقضى يوما مكانه، وإن كان من غير شهر رمضان، فلياكل من آخره، فقد اكل من اوله" .
It is narrated from Mak'hool (may Allah have mercy on him) that it was asked from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): If a person has taken suhoor and thinks that it is still night, while in fact Fajr has already risen, then Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If this is in the month of Ramadan, then he should fast and make up for that day, and if it is a fast of any month other than Ramadan, then he may eat for the rest of the day because he began the day (in that state).
