Chapter on grandmothers
Hadith Number: 99
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The first grandmother who was given one-sixth was the father’s mother, along with her son."

Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not make the grandmother an heir along with the son.

نا نا هشيم، قال: انا سلمة بن علقمة، عن حميد بن هلال العدوي، عن رجل منهم , ان رجلا منهم مات وترك جدتيه، ام امه وام ابيه وابوه حي، فوليت تركته، فاعطيت السدس ام امه، وتركت ام ابيه، فقيل لي: كان ينبغي لك ان تشرك بينهما. فاتيت عمران بن حصين، فسالته عن ذلك، فقال:" اشرك بينهما في السدس" . ففعلت.
A man passed away and left behind his maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother, while his father was alive. I took charge of the inheritance, gave one-sixth to the maternal grandmother, and left out the paternal grandmother. It was said: "Both should have been given an equal share." I went to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Let both of them share in the one-sixth." So I did accordingly.

Hadith Number: 103
نا نا هشيم، قال: انا خالد، عن ابن سيرين، ان رجلا من بني حنظلة يقال له حسكة هلك ابن له، وترك اباه حسكة وام ابيه، فرفع ذلك إلى ابي موسى الاشعري، فكتب في ذلك إلى عمر بن الخطاب، فكتب إليه ان" ورث ام حسكة من ابن حسكة مع ابنها حسكة" .
A man from Banu Hanzalah, who was called Hasakah, his son died and he left behind his father Hasakah and his grandmother. The matter reached Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), who wrote to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Give Hasakah's mother a share in her grandson's inheritance."

It is narrated in the same manner from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

نا نا حماد بن زيد، عن كثير بن شنظير، عن الحسن، وابن سيرين , ان الاشعري " ورث ام حسكة من ابن لحسكة وحسكة حي" .
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) included the mother of Hasakah in inheritance with the son of Hasakah, even though Hasakah was alive.

نا هشيم، قال: انا حميد، عن الحسن، وابن سيرين " انهما كانا يورثانها مع ابنها" .
Hasan and Ibn Sirin, may Allah have mercy on them both, said: Both of them would give inheritance to the mother of Hasakah along with her son.

نا هشيم، قال: انا خالد، ومنصور، عن انس بن سيرين، قال: شهدت شريحا اتي في رجل ترك جدتيه، ام ابيه وام امه، وابوه حي، " فاشرك بين جدتيه في السدس" .
A case was brought before Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) in which a man had left behind his maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother, while his father was alive. So Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) included both grandmothers in the one-sixth share.

نا سفيان، عن ايوب، عن انس بن سيرين، ان شريحا، " ورث الجدة مع ابنها" .
Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) included the grandmother with her son in the inheritance.
