Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: An Ansari made his slave a mudabbar (i.e., he willed that the slave would be freed after his death), and he had no other wealth besides him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sold that slave, and Ibn Nuham bought him. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He was a Coptic slave who died during the era of Ibn Zubair.

Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The name of this slave was Yaqub Qibti.

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man made his slave a mudabbar (freed him after his death) and he had nothing else besides him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed, he became angry and sold him for seven hundred dirhams, gave the price to the man, and said: "Use it for your expenses."

A similar incident from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Muhammad bin Ali (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sold the service of a mudabbar slave.

Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "They disliked selling a mudabbar slave, except if he himself wished to be sold."

Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "They considered it disliked to sell a mudabbar slave, but they permitted selling his service."

Saeed bin Al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "A mudabbar slave should neither be sold nor given as a gift."

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) considered it disliked to sell a mudabbar slave.

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is not permissible to sell a mudabbar slave. However, if the owner is in need and has no other wealth, then permission is given to sell him, but their original statement is that selling him is not correct."
