Chapter on Parents’ Rights – Hoping for Paradise by excelling in honoring one’s father.
Hadith Number: 425
اخبرنا ابو يعلى ، قال: حدثنا ابو خيثمة ، قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن إبراهيم ، قال: حدثنا عطاء بن السائب ، عن ابي عبد الرحمن السلمي: ان رجلا اتى ابا الدرداء ، فقال: إن ابي لم يزل بي حتى تزوجت، وإنه الآن يامرني بطلاقها، قال: ما انا بالذي آمرك ان تعق والدك، ولا انا بالذي آمرك ان تطلق امراتك، غير انك إن شئت، حدثتك ما سمعت من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، سمعته، يقول: " الوالد اوسط ابواب الجنة، فحافظ على ذلك إن شئت، او دع"، قال: فاحسب عطاء، قال: فطلقها .
Abu Abdur Rahman Salmi narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: My father insisted a lot and got me married, and now he is telling me to divorce this woman. Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not instruct you to disobey your father, nor will I tell you to divorce your wife. However, if you wish, I can tell you what I heard from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard him say: "The father is the middle gate of the gates of Paradise; now if you wish, protect it, and if you wish, leave it."
