Chapter on Spreading Peace and Feeding Others – Mention of the prohibition against initiating greetings with People of the Book
Hadith Number: 500
اخبرنا الفضل بن الحباب ، قال: حدثنا مسدد بن مسرهد ، قال: حدثنا ابو عوانة ، عن سهيل ، عن ابيه ، عن ابي هريرة ، ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: " لا تبادروا اهل الكتاب بالسلام، فإذا لقيتموهم في طريق، فاضطروهم إلى اضيقه" .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "Do not initiate the greeting of peace to the People of the Book. When you meet them on the road, force them to take the narrower path."

اخبرنا محمد بن يعقوب الخطيب بالاهواز، قال: حدثنا عبد الوارث بن عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث ، قال: حدثنا ابي ، قال: حدثنا شعبة ، عن سهيل ، عن ابيه ، عن ابي هريرة ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " لا تبدءوا اهل الكتاب بالسلام، وإذا رايتموهم في طريق، فاضطروهم إلى اضيقه" .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not initiate greeting (salaam) to the People of the Book. When you see them on a road, force them to take the narrower path."
