باب اسْتِحْبَابِ صَلاَةِ الضُّحَى وَأَنَّ أَقَلَّهَا رَكْعَتَانِ وَأَكْمَلَهَا ثَمَانِ رَكَعَاتٍ وَأَوْسَطَهَا أَرْبَعُ رَكَعَاتٍ أَوْ سِتٌّ وَالْحَثِّ عَلَى الْمُحَافَظَةِ عَلَيْهَا:
Chapter: It is recommended to pray Duha, the least of which is two rak`ah, the best of which is eight, and the average of which is four or six, and encouragement to do so regularly

وحدثني حجاج بن الشاعر ، حدثنا معلى بن اسد ، حدثنا وهيب بن خالد ، عن جعفر بن محمد ، عن ابيه ، عن ابي مرة مولى عقيل، عن ام هانئ ، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، " صلى في بيتها عام الفتح، ثماني ركعات في ثوب واحد، قد خالف بين طرفيه ".
Abu Murra narrated on the authority of Umm Hani that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) on the day of the Conquest of Makkah observed in her house eight rak'ahs of prayer in one cloth, its opposite corners having been tied from the opposite sides.

حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد بن اسماء الضبعي ، حدثنا مهدي وهو ابن ميمون ، حدثنا واصل مولى ابي عيينة، عن يحيى بن عقيل ، عن يحيى بن يعمر ، عن ابي الاسود الدؤلي ، عن ابي ذر ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، انه قال: " يصبح على كل سلامى من احدكم صدقة، فكل تسبيحة صدقة، وكل تحميدة صدقة، وكل تهليلة صدقة، وكل تكبيرة صدقة، وامر بالمعروف صدقة، ونهي عن المنكر صدقة، ويجزئ من ذلك ركعتان يركعهما من الضحى ".
Abu Dharr (RA) reported Allah's Apostle ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) as saying: In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Allah's glorification is an act of charity. Every utterance of praise of Him is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Oneness is an act of charity, every utterance of profession of His Greatness is an act of charity, enjoining good is an act of charity, forbidding what is disreputable is an act of charity, and two rak'ahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.

حدثنا شيبان بن فروخ ، حدثنا عبد الوارث ، حدثنا ابو التياح ، حدثني ابو عثمان النهدي ، عن ابي هريرة ، قال: " اوصاني خليلي صلى الله عليه وسلم بثلاث، بصيام ثلاثة ايام من كل شهر، وركعتي الضحى، وان اوتر قبل ان ارقد ".
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported. My friend (the Holy Prophet, may peace be upon him) has instructed me to do three things: three fasts during every month, two rak'ahs of the forenoon prayer, and observing Witr prayer before going to bed.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: My friend Abu'l-Qasim ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) instructed me to do three things, and the rest of the hadith is the same.

وحدثني هارون بن عبد الله ، ومحمد بن رافع ، قالا: حدثنا ابن ابي فديك ، عن الضحاك بن عثمان ، عن إبراهيم بن عبد الله بن حنين ، عن ابي مرة مولى ام هانئ، عن ابي الدرداء ، قال: " اوصاني حبيبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بثلاث، لن ادعهن ما عشت، بصيام ثلاثة ايام من كل شهر، وصلاة الضحى، وبان لا انام حتى اوتر ".
Abu Murra, the freed slave of Umm Hani, narrated on the authority of Abu Darda': My Friend ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) instructed me in three (acts), and I would never abandon them as long as I live. (And these three things are): Three fasts during every month, the forenoon prayer, and that I should not sleep till I have observed the Witr prayer.

باب اسْتِحْبَابِ رَكْعَتَيْ سُنَّةِ الْفَجْرِ وَالْحَثِّ عَلَيْهِمَا وَتَخْفِيفِهِمَا وَالْمُحَافَظَةِ عَلَيْهِمَا وَبَيَانِ مَا يُسْتَحَبُّ أَنْ يُقْرَأَ فِيهِمَا:
Chapter: It is recommended to pray two rak`ah for the sunnah of Fajr. And encouragement to pray them regularly, and to make them brief, and to persist in offering them, and clarifying what is recommended to recite therein

حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى ، قال: قرات على مالك ، عن نافع ، عن ابن عمر ، ان حفصة ام المؤمنين اخبرته، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، " كان إذا سكت المؤذن من الاذان لصلاة الصبح، وبدا الصبح، ركع ركعتين خفيفتين، قبل ان تقام الصلاة ".
Ibn 'Umar reported that Hafsa, the Mother of the Believers, informed him that when the Mu'adhdhin became silent after calling (people) to the dawn prayer, the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) commenced the dawn (prayer) when it dawned by observing two short rak'ahs before the commencement of the (Fard) prayer.

وحدثنا يحيى بن يحيى ، وقتيبة ، وابن رمح ، عن الليث بن سعد . ح. وحدثني زهير بن حرب ، وعبيد الله بن سعيد ، قالا: حدثنا يحيى ، عن عبيد الله . ح، وحدثني زهير بن حرب ، حدثنا إسماعيل ، عن ايوب كلهم، عن نافع ، بهذا الإسناد، كما قال مالك.
This hadith has been transmitted by Nafi' with the same chain of narrators.

وحدثني احمد بن عبد الله بن الحكم ، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر ، حدثنا شعبة ، عن زيد بن محمد ، قال: سمعت نافعا يحدث، عن ابن عمر ، عن حفصة ، قالت: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، " إذا طلع الفجر، لا يصلي إلا ركعتين خفيفتين ".
Hafsa reported that when it was dawn, the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) did not observe (any other prayers) but two short rak'ahs.
