It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abzi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have become junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) and I have not found water (so what should I do?)" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do not pray (rather wait until you find water)." Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Commander of the Faithful, do you not remember when you and I were in a military expedition and we both became junub and did not find water? So you did not pray, while I rolled in the earth and then prayed. Then when we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I mentioned this incident to him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this.' And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hand on the earth, then blew on it, and wiped his face and both hands with it."

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "We become junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) and we do not have water (so how should we perform the prayer)?" Then he mentioned the incident of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) along with him. He says that Hazrat Ammar said, "So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and I told him about this incident." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It would have been sufficient for you to do like this with your two hands." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his two hands on the earth, then shook them off, then blew on them, and then wiped his face and both hands with them. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in the chain of this hadith, Imam Shu’bah has inserted Dhir (the narrator) between Salamah bin Kuhail and Sa’id bin Abdur Rahman. Imam Thawri narrated this hadith from Salamah, and he from Abu Malik and Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman bin Abza (may Allah be pleased with him), and they from Abdur Rahman bin Abza (may Allah be pleased with him). However, in the narration of Imam Thawri and Shu’bah, there is no mention of "shaking the dust off the hands."

Hazrat Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah and Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them), when Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, what is your opinion if a person becomes junub and does not find water for a month, should he continue to perform tayammum?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "He will not perform tayammum (nor will he pray)." So Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Have you not heard the statement of Sayyiduna Ammar to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), (in which he says) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for an important task, and (on the way) I became junub and did not find water, so I rolled in the earth like an animal (and prayed). Then (after returning) I informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to strike your hands on the earth, then wipe them together, then wipe your face and both hands with them.'" Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in this hadith, the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) «‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ تَمْسَحَ» ‏‏‏‏ means to shake off the dust from both hands. (Because) "al-nafd" means to rub one palm with the other so that the dust on them falls off.

And the explanation of this evidence that tayammum is not like ghusl in all legal rulings, because a person who performs ghusl due to janabah will only be required to perform ghusl again when he becomes junub again. Whereas a person who performs tayammum due to janabah in the absence of water will be required to perform ghusl when water becomes available.

Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we traveled through the night until, when it was the time of sahar before dawn, we camped. There is no moment more delightful for a traveler than the sleep of the last part of the night (so we slept). The heat of the sun was what woke us up (meaning, we slept late into the morning and missed the Fajr prayer). Then he narrated part of the hadith and said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the call to prayer given for the prayer and led the people in prayer. When he finished the prayer, suddenly he noticed a man sitting apart who had not prayed with the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him:“O so-and-so, what prevented you from praying with the people?”He replied,“O Messenger of Allah, I became junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) and there is no water.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“It is obligatory upon you to perform tayammum with clean earth, for that will suffice you.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and along the way, the people complained to him about the scarcity of water. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for so-and-so (Abu Raja mentioned his name but ‘Awf forgot it) and called for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and ordered them:“Go and search for water for us.”So the two of them set out in search of water. They met a woman who was riding on her camel between two water skins or water bags. Then he narrated part of the hadith and said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had it announced among the people:“Let the animals drink and you also drink.”So whoever wished, let his animals drink, and whoever wished, drank himself. Finally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a water vessel to the man who had become junub and said:“Go and pour it over yourself (i.e., perform ghusl).”Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this hadith, there is also evidence that a person who prays with tayammum, when he finds water, must perform ghusl if he was junub, and if he was in a state of minor impurity, he must perform wudu. But it is not obligatory for him to repeat the prayers he performed with tayammum, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he ordered the one who prayed with tayammum to perform ghusl upon finding water, did not order him to repeat the prayers he had performed with tayammum. In this hadith, there is also evidence that for the one performing ghusl for janabah, it is not obligatory to perform wudu before pouring water over the rest of the body, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the junub man to pour water over his body, he did not order him to begin with wudu and washing the limbs of wudu and then pour water over the whole body. By the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is clear and correct that when a junub person pours water over his body, he is considered to have performed the obligatory ghusl. And in this, there is also evidence that beginning with wudu and then pouring water over the whole body for the one performing ghusl is optional and recommended, not obligatory or compulsory.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates a marfu’ tradition regarding the statement of Allah Almighty «‏‏‏‏وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة النساء ] “And if you are ill or on a journey,”that if a Muslim person is wounded in the path of Allah Almighty, or he develops boils or abscesses, or he is afflicted with smallpox, and he becomes in a state of janabah, and he fears death if he performs ghusl, then he should perform tayammum. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that no one except Ata bin Sa’ib has narrated this tradition as marfu’.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man became junub (in a state requiring ritual bath) during winter, so he asked about the matter, and he was ordered to perform ghusl (ritual bath). (He performed ghusl) and then he died. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What happened to them? They killed him, may Allah kill them." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said three times: "Allah has made earth or tayammum a means of purification." There is doubt regarding Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) (whether he said 'earth' or 'tayammum'), then this doubt was removed.
