Chapter 1: Beginning of the obligation of the five daily prayers
Hadith Number: 301
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from a man of his people, Sayyiduna Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“While I was in a state between sleep and wakefulness near the House (Ka’bah), I heard someone say, ‘Take the one from the middle of the three.’ Then a golden basin was brought to me in which there was Zamzam water.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“My chest was opened from here to here.”Qatadah says: I asked,“What does he mean by that?”He said:“It means that the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was split up to the lower part of the belly, then my heart was taken out, washed with Zamzam water, and then returned to its place. Then it was filled with faith and wisdom. Then a white animal, bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, was brought to me, which is called Buraq. I was mounted upon it, and then I set off until we reached the lowest heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He replied, ‘Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ Jibreel (peace be upon him) replied, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us. (The angels) said, ‘Welcome, may your arrival be blessed.’ Then I came to Adam (peace be upon him), so I asked, ‘O Jibreel, who is this?’ He replied, ‘This is your noble father Adam (peace be upon him).’ I greeted him with salam, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous Prophet.’ He said: Then we continued until we reached the second heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He replied, ‘(Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us. (The angels) said, ‘Welcome, may your arrival be blessed.’ Then I went to Yahya and ‘Isa (peace be upon them). I said, ‘O Jibreel, who are these two gentlemen?’ He replied, ‘Yahya and ‘Isa (peace be upon them).’ Sa’eed says: I think he said in his narration, ‘Two maternal cousins.’ So I greeted both of them with salam, and they said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the noble Prophet.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Then we continued until we reached the third heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us, and the angels said, ‘Welcome, welcome.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Then I came to Yusuf (peace be upon him), and I greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.’ Then we proceeded to the fourth heaven, and there too Jibreel and the keepers had a conversation similar to the previous one. Then I came to Idris (peace be upon him), and I greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the noble Prophet.’ Then we reached the fifth heaven, and I came to Harun (peace be upon him) and greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the blessed brother and the righteous Prophet.’ Then we proceeded to the sixth heaven. Then I came to Musa (peace be upon him)—may Allah’s mercy be upon them all. I greeted him with salam, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.’ Then when I moved on, he began to weep and said, then I returned towards Sidrat al-Muntaha.”The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“The fruits of this (lote) tree are like the water jars of Hajar (a town), and its leaves are as large as the ears of elephants.”And the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“You saw four rivers flowing from the roots of Sidrah. Two rivers were visible and two were hidden. So I asked, ‘O Jibreel, what are these rivers?’ He replied, ‘These two hidden (covered) rivers have gone into Paradise, and these two visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.’ Then al-Bayt al-Ma’mur was raised for us. I said, ‘O Jibreel, what is this?’ He replied, ‘This is al-Bayt al-Ma’mur. Every day seventy thousand angels enter it, and when they leave, they never return to it again.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Two vessels were brought to me, one containing wine and the other milk. Both vessels were presented to me, and I chose the milk. It was said to me, ‘You have chosen correctly. Allah has guided you to the thing of goodness and virtue. Your Ummah will also follow you in this.’ Then fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me every day. I took them and came to Musa (peace be upon him). He asked, ‘What have you been commanded?’ I said, ‘I have been commanded to perform fifty prayers every day.’ He said, ‘Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to bear this. I have tested the Children of Israel before you and have examined them thoroughly (and tried my best to reform them). Go back to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah.’ I went back (and asked for a reduction), and five prayers were reduced for me. Then I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Musa (peace be upon him), and Allah kept granting me reductions, and Musa (peace be upon him) kept telling me to ask for more reduction, until I returned with the command of five prayers every day. He said, ‘Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to bear this. I have tested the Children of Israel before you and have put them through a very hard trial. Go back to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“I have gone back to my Lord so many times that I feel shy. Therefore, I am now content and accept (this command).”Then I was called out: ‘Indeed, I have established My obligation and have reduced it for My servants, and I have made the reward of every good deed tenfold.’

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to him a hadith that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed him about the night of Isra, then he mentioned the complete hadith. Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Jarud (may Allah have mercy on him) while he was sitting beside me,“What is meant by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (that my chest was opened from here to here)?”He replied,“(It means that) the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was opened from his collarbone to the (pubic) hair below the navel.”And I also heard him say that it was opened from the chest hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to the (pubic) hair below the navel. Then Muhammad bin Yahya narrated the complete hadith. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the wording of this hadith indicates that in the narration of Sa’id, the statement of Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him): «فقلت له» “I said to him,”does not mean that he said it to Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), but rather what he meant is that he said it to Jarud.

Chapter 2: On the obligation of the five daily prayers by a general report, with a general wording but a specific meaning
Hadith Number: 303
It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair that he heard Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) saying: Indeed, in the beginning, the prayer was made obligatory as two rak‘ahs, then the prayer during travel (two rak‘ahs) was kept as it was, and the prayer during residence (four rak‘ahs) was completed. So I said to Urwah: Then what is the reason that you perform the full prayer (four rak‘ahs) during travel? He replied: She used to interpret it as Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) interpreted it. The Imam narrates from his teacher Sa‘id bin Abdur Rahman Makhzumi with the same chain as the aforementioned narration, but in this, instead of «سمع، اخبرني» , the narration is from «عن» in all places.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Allah Almighty has, through the tongue of your Prophet (peace be upon him), made obligatory four rak‘ahs of prayer in residence, two rak‘ahs in travel, and one rak‘ah in fear.

Chapter 3: On the report that explains the ambiguous wording mentioned
Hadith Number: Q305
By this, the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم meant some prayers, not all. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم meant four prayers other than the Maghrib prayer. Similarly, when the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said, "Then an addition was made in the prayer during residence," by this the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم meant the three prayers other than Fajr and Maghrib. And the explanation of the evidence for the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Allah Almighty made four rak‘ahs obligatory upon you through the tongue of your Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم during residence, by this the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم meant the prayers other than Maghrib and Fajr. Likewise, when he said that in travel there are two rak‘ahs, he meant the prayers other than Maghrib. This is of the same kind as when we say in our books that these words are general but their meaning is specific.
Hadith Number: 305
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that (in the beginning of Islam) the prayers for travel and residence were made obligatory as two rak‘ahs each. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) settled in Madinah Munawwarah, two rak‘ahs were added to the prayer in residence, and the Fajr prayer was left as it was due to its lengthy recitation, and the Maghrib prayer was also left as it was because it is the witr (odd-numbered prayer) of the day.“Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this hadith is gharib (rare). To my knowledge, no narrator except Mahbub bin Hasan has narrated it in a musnad form. The students of Dawud, while narrating this report, have said «عن الشعبي عن عائشه» (that is, they did not mention Masruq, the teacher of Shu‘bi), whereas Mahbub bin Hasan has mentioned Masruq by name and narrated the chain as connected.

Chapter 4: On the obligation of the five daily prayers
Hadith Number: Q306
And the explanation of the evidence that only five prayers are obligatory. All prayers besides these five are voluntary. Except for the five prayers, no other prayer is obligatory.
Hadith Number: 306
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while his hair was disheveled. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), tell me what Allah has made obligatory upon me from the prayers?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Five prayers, unless you perform any voluntary prayer." He said, "Tell me what Allah has made obligatory upon me from zakat?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed him of the Islamic rulings regarding (zakat). He said, "By Him Who has honored you, I will not do any voluntary act; I will neither decrease anything from what Allah has made obligatory upon me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By his father, if he has spoken the truth, he has succeeded." Or he said: "By his father, if he has spoken the truth, he will enter Paradise."

Chapter 5: Evidence that establishing prayer is part of faith
Hadith Number: 307
Hazrat Abu Jamrah Duba'i Nasr bin Imran, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that I have a jug in which I make nabidh (a drink) and I drink from it. Then, when I sit with people for a long time, I fear disgrace and infamy because of its sweetness (that people might think it is intoxicating). He said: The delegation of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he said: "Welcome to the delegation, neither were you humiliated nor were you regretful." (Meaning, you became honored by becoming Muslims with happiness.) So they said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, indeed there are the polytheists of the tribe of Mudar between us and you (as a barrier), and we can only come to you in the sacred months. Therefore, please explain to us all the rulings of the religion so that when we acquire them and act upon them (or when any one of us acts upon them), he will enter Paradise, and we may also invite those we leave behind to them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I command you with four things and I forbid you from four things. I command you to have faith in Allah. Do you know what it is to have faith in Allah?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "To testify that there is no god but Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the spoils of war, and I forbid you from making nabidh in pumpkin vessels, hollowed-out wooden vessels, green glazed jars, and tar-coated vessels."

Chapter 6: Evidence that establishing prayer is part of Islam, as faith and Islam are synonymous
Hadith Number: Q308
I have dictated the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding Jibreel (peace be upon him) asking the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about Islam, in the Book of Purification.
