Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led five rak‘ahs in prayer. He was asked whether the prayer had been increased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "No." Then, upon realizing the actual situation, he performed two prostrations.

Against the statement of those who claim that if a person finishes the prayer and, having been forgetful in his prayer, speaks after the salutation out of forgetfulness, then he does not perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness; and this statement is contrary to what is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed two prostrations after concluding the prayer with salam and after having spoken.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two prostrations of forgetfulness after having spoken. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: If by the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the prostrations of forgetfulness after speaking, it is meant the conversation that took place when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had led five units (rak‘ahs) in the Zuhr prayer, and a man said to him,“Has there been an addition in the prayer?”So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“What is that (addition)?”Then this conversation of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is similar in meaning to the conversation mentioned in the incident of Dhul-Yadayn (i.e., the Prophet was investigating the actual situation). And if Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) means the conversation that is mentioned in another narration, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and either added to it or reduced from it, and it was said to him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Indeed, I am also a human being; I forget just as you forget,”then regarding these words, the narrators differ as to when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this conversation. Abu Bakr Nahshali narrates from his chain from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this conversation before performing the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Whereas Mansur bin Mu’tamir and Hasan bin Ubaidullah both narrate from their chain from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this conversation after performing the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Therefore, from any narration for which there is no opposing narration, it is not established that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this conversation in a state where he was fully aware and remembered that two prostrations of forgetfulness were obligatory upon him. Whereas it is established that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after saying the salam, spoke out of forgetfulness, in a state where he did not know that he had forgotten and that two prostrations of forgetfulness were obligatory upon him. Then, after having spoken out of forgetfulness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness.

Ibrahim bin Suwaid narrates that Hazrat Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) led us in five rak'ahs of Zuhr prayer. After saying salam, the people said, "O Abu Shibl, you have led five rak'ahs." He said, "Never, I did not do so." The people said, "Why not (you did lead five rak'ahs)." I (Ibrahim bin Suwaid) was sitting on one side among the people and was still a young boy. I said, "Why not, you have led five rak'ahs." He said to me, "O one-eyed (blind in one eye), are you also saying the same?" I replied, "Yes." So he turned towards the qiblah and performed two prostrations, then said salam. Then he said that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in five rak'ahs. When he finished the prayer, the people began to talk quietly among themselves. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What has happened to you?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has the prayer been increased?" He said, "No." They said, "Indeed, you have led five rak'ahs." So he turned towards the qiblah and performed two prostrations, then said salam. Then he said, "Indeed, I am a human being; I forget just as you forget."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed tashahhud in the two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujood as-sahw) and then gave salam. These are the words of the hadith of Abu Hatim. He narrated this to us in Basra. When he narrated this hadith a second time in Baghdad, he mentioned these words: Sayyiduna (Imran) said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in prayer, and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forgot. After giving salam and speaking, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness. Whereas Muhammad bin Yahya narrated it in this way: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in prayer, and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forgot in his prayer, so he performed two prostrations, then performed tashahhud, then gave salam. Saeed bin Muhammad, in his narration, said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in prayer, then performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then sat for tashahhud, and then gave salam. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have not mentioned the wording of anyone’s narration except that of Abbas bin Yazid.

In opposition to the statement of those who claim that one who catches an odd (rak‘ah) of the imam’s prayer must perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness: these two prostrations, if the praying person were to perform them, would be prostrations for intentional action, not for forgetfulness; because the one who catches an odd (rak‘ah) of the imam’s prayer intentionally sits in the first and third (rak‘ahs), as he is commanded to follow his imam, sitting in the place where he is commanded to sit. So how can one be forgetful who does what he is required to do and intentionally performs the action? And when it is invalid for him to be considered forgetful, it is impossible for the two prostrations of forgetfulness to be required of him, according to the report of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:“When you come to the prayer, you must approach with calmness and dignity. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete or make up.”

Hazrat Amr bin Wahb narrates that we were present in the service of Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), so he was asked, "Has anyone from this Ummah, besides Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), ever led the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer?" He replied, "Yes, we were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on a journey," then he narrated the complete hadith. Both of the Imam’s teachers narrate that then we mounted (and returned), and we saw that Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. He had completed one rak’ah and was leading the second rak’ah. I wanted to inform him (of the arrival of the Prophet), but the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade me. So, the rak’ah that we caught (with him), we performed, and the one that we missed, we completed. In the narration of Mu’ammal, it is stated that the rak’ah that was left, we completed it.
