636| Command to pray during solar and lunar eclipses
Hadith Number: Q1370
And the explanation of the evidence that neither of them is eclipsed because of the death of any person; rather, both of them are two signs among the signs of Allah Almighty.
Hadith Number: 1370
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Uqbah bin Amr رضي الله عنه narrates from the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon are not eclipsed due to anyone’s death, but both are two signs among the signs of Allah. Therefore, when you see this sign, perform prayer.”Imam Abu Bakr رحمه الله says that the statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم,“When you see this sign, perform prayer,”contains evidence and proof for the madhhab of Imam Muzani رحمه الله in the issue where our companions among the hadith scholars have opposed him: that if a man who swears an oath has two wives and says to them, ‘When both of you give birth, both of you will be divorced.’ Imam Muzani رحمه الله says that when one of the women gives birth, both will be divorced, because it is certain that both women cannot give birth to the same child at the same time; rather, one woman will give birth to one child. Therefore, the statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم,“When you see this sign, perform prayer,”means that when you see the eclipse of either one of them, perform prayer, because it is certain that the sun and the moon are not eclipsed at the same time, just as two women cannot give birth to the same child.

637| Report indicating that eclipses are a warning from Allah to His servants
Hadith Number: Q1371
Allah Almighty says: «وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا تَخْوِيفًا» [ سورة الإسراء: 59 ] "And We do not send the signs except to frighten (people)."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up in a state of anxiety and worry, fearing that it might be the Day of Resurrection. He (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to the mosque, and he began to pray standing, with very long standing, bowing, and prostrations. I have never seen him (peace and blessings be upon him) perform such a lengthy prayer. Then (after the prayer) he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, these signs which Allah sends do not occur because of anyone's death or life, but Allah sends them to frighten His servants. Therefore, when you see any of these things, hasten to the remembrance of Allah, supplication and pleading to Him, and seeking forgiveness for your sins from Him."

Hadith Number: 1372
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed, so people began to say that the solar eclipse occurred due to the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, delivered a sermon to the people, and said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. Therefore, when you see an eclipse, glorify Allah «الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» , pray «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» , recite «سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه» , and continue to pray until the eclipse of whichever of them is eclipsed becomes clear." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) descended (from the pulpit) and led two units of prayer.

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was practicing archery with my arrows during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when suddenly the sun was eclipsed. I put down my arrows and went towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When I reached him, he was standing, raising both his hands, glorifying Allah, proclaiming His greatness, praising Him, and supplicating until the eclipse was over. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited two surahs and led us in two rak‘ahs (units of prayer).

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were present with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun was eclipsed. The Prophet (peace be upon him), due to haste, pulled his cloak and proceeded towards the mosque, and the people also gathered around him. He (peace be upon him) led us in two rak‘ahs as you pray, then when the eclipse cleared, he (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon to us and said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, with which Allah frightens His servants, and they do not eclipse due to the death of anyone among the people. Therefore, when you see either of them eclipsed, then pray and supplicate until your difficulty is removed."
