Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed and the noble Companions were present with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the (eclipse prayer), and he stood for a long time equal to the length of Surah Al-Baqarah, then he performed a very long bowing (ruku‘), then when he raised his (blessed) head from ruku‘, he stood for a long time, though less than the first standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was shorter than the first ruku‘. Then he performed prostrations (sujood). Then he stood for a long time, which was less than the previous standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was less than the ruku‘ of the first rak‘ah. Then he raised his (blessed) head. Then he stood for a long time, which was less than the previous standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was shorter than the previous ruku‘. Then he performed prostrations and completed the prayer, by which time the sun had become clear and bright. (After finishing) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. Their eclipses do not occur due to the death or life of anyone. When you see an eclipse, remember Allah.”The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we saw you during the prayer reach out and grasp something, then we saw you step back in fear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Indeed, I saw Paradise and tried to take a bunch of its grapes. If I had taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains (and it would not have finished). And I also saw Hell, and I have never seen a more terrifying sight than today, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.”The Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is the reason for that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Because of their ingratitude.”It was asked: Do they disbelieve in Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“They are ungrateful to their husbands, they do not appreciate good treatment. If you were to treat one of them kindly for a long time, and then she saw something displeasing from you, she would say: ‘I have never seen any good from you.’”Janab Rau‘ narrates that the meaning of ‘Ashir’ is husband.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode on his mount and went to a nearby place. Before he returned, the sun was eclipsed. I went outside with a few women, and (at that time) we were in front of the chamber when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came quickly, dismounted from his mount, and stood at the place where he led the prayer. The people also stood behind him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ (and began the prayer). He performed a very long standing, then a long bowing, then raised his head, then he stood for a long standing which was shorter than the first standing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and it was a long bowing but shorter than the first bowing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head, then he prostrated, and it was a very long prostration. Then he raised his head from prostration, then performed a prostration shorter than the first one. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and he performed a long standing which was shorter than the previous standing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, a long bowing, and it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and stood for a long standing, but it was shorter than the previous standing. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the prostrations and completed the prayer, thus there were four bowings and four prostrations in the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, and by that time the sun had become bright.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray, and he recited aloud. Then he bowed (ruku) for as long as he had recited, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited again for as long as the first recitation, then he bowed again for as long as he had recited. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and performed prostration (sujood). Then when he stood up for the second rak’ah, he did the same (recitation and bowing) as he had done in the first rak’ah. Then he said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death of any human being. Therefore, when you see an eclipse, hasten to prayer (so that Allah may resolve your difficulty).”The narrator says that on that day (the beloved son of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away, so people began to say that the sun was eclipsed because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed on a very hot day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his companions in prayer, and he stood for such a long time that the companions began to fall down. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and did (a long standing) as before. In this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed four ruku‘ and four prostrations. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Indeed, everything that you have been promised was shown to me.”Then he narrated the complete hadith and said:“Indeed, the Arabs used to say that the sun and the moon are eclipsed due to the death of a great and important person, and indeed these are two signs among the signs of Allah which He shows you. Therefore, when either of them is eclipsed, perform prayer until it becomes clear and bright.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on a day of intense heat, there was a solar eclipse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led his noble companions in the prayer of Kusuf (eclipse prayer). He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for such a long time that the companions began to fall down, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed (ruku‘) and prolonged it as well. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and did as he had done in the first rak‘ah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to move forward and backward. In this way, he performed four bowings (ruku‘) and four prostrations (sujood), then said: "Everything that you have been promised was shown to me. Paradise was presented to me until I wanted to take a bunch of its grapes. And if I had wished, I would have taken it. Then I wanted to take a bunch from it but my hand could not reach it. Then Hell was shown to me, so I began to move back out of fear that it might engulf you. And I saw a tall, black-skinned woman from the tribe of Himyar being punished because of a cat. She had tied up the cat, neither giving it anything to eat nor setting it free so that it could eat the insects of the earth (thus it died hungry and thirsty). And I saw Abu Thumamah ‘Amr bin Malik in Hell dragging his intestines, and people used to say that indeed the eclipse of the sun and the moon only occurs due to the death of a great leader. And indeed, these are two signs among the signs of Allah, which Allah shows you, so when an eclipse occurs, pray until the sun becomes bright again." Janab Bundar did not narrate the word "al-Qamar" to us. Janab ‘Ata narrates from his chain from Sayyidah ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two bowings (ruku‘) in each rak‘ah.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a solar eclipse, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the (eclipse) prayer and made the companions stand for a very long time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the companions stand, then performed bowing (ruku‘), then made them stand again, then performed bowing again; in this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs, with three bowings in each rak‘ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the third bowing, then prostrated, until, due to the long standing that day, some companions fainted and buckets of water were poured over them. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, he would say «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏, and when he raised his head from bowing, he would say «‏‏‏‏سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ» ‏‏‏‏, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not finish the prayer until the sun became bright. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and praised and glorified Allah, and said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of any person, but these two are among the signs of Allah with which Allah frightens His servants. So when you see them eclipsed, hasten to the remembrance of Allah until they become bright and clear.”

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) led the prayer of eclipse; he (peace be upon him) recited (Qur'an), then bowed (ruku'), then he (peace be upon him) recited again, then bowed, then he (peace be upon him) recited again, then bowed, then recited Qur'an, then bowed, then he (peace be upon him) performed prostrations (sujood), and the second rak'ah was also performed in the same manner. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have mentioned the chains of these narrations in Kitab al-Kabir. Therefore, it is permissible for a person to perform as many bowings (ruku') in the eclipse prayer as he wishes, according to the method of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him). If he wishes to perform two bowings in each rak'ah, he may do so. And if he wishes, he may perform three bowings in each rak'ah. And if he prefers, he may perform four bowings in each rak'ah. Because all these narrations are authentically proven from the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him). And these narrations are evidence that the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the eclipse prayer not just once, but several times.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on the day when the beloved son of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, there was a solar eclipse. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer with six bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sajdah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, then recited a long recitation, then performed a bowing as long as his recitation, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited a little less than the first recitation, then performed a bowing as long as that recitation, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited a little less than the second recitation, then performed a bowing as long as that recitation, then raised his blessed head, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bent down and performed two prostrations. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up (for the second rak’ah) and before performing the prostrations, he did three bowings, each bowing longer than the one after it, but the bowing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was equal to his standing. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved back in his prayer, the rows of people also moved back with him. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward, the rows also moved forward. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun had become bright. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“O people, indeed the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah Almighty, and they do not eclipse because of the death of any human being. Therefore, when you see an eclipse, perform prayer until the sun becomes bright.”
