Anas bin Sirin says that when Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from Syria (after complaining about Hajjaj to the caliph), we met him at Ayn al-Tamr. We saw that he was performing prayer while riding a donkey, and his face was turned to the left of the Qiblah. Upon this, I said, "I have seen you praying with your face turned in a direction other than the Qiblah." He replied, "If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing so, I would not have done it myself."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would set out on a journey before the sun had declined, he would not perform the Zuhr and Asr prayers until their time arrived, then he would stop somewhere (on the way) and combine Zuhr and Asr prayers. But if the sun had already declined before starting the journey, he would first perform the Zuhr prayer and then mount (his ride).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that no person should allocate any portion of his prayer to the devil in such a way that (after concluding the prayer) he makes it necessary for himself to always turn to the right side. I have often seen the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turning to the left side.

Sayyiduna Malik bin Buhaina (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who, after the takbir, was performing two rak‘ahs of prayer. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, people gathered around that man, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you performing four rak‘ahs of the morning prayer? Has the morning prayer become four rak‘ahs?"

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle (Dhat al-Riqa’ or Tabuk). My camel became tired and sluggish. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said,“Jabir!”I replied,“At your service, O Messenger of Allah!”He asked,“What happened?”I said,“My camel has become tired and sluggish, it is not moving, so I have fallen behind.”The next morning I arrived, then we went to the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met me at the door of the mosque. He asked,“Have you just arrived?”I replied,“Yes.”He said,“Then leave your camel and go into the mosque and pray two rak‘ahs.”I went inside and performed the prayer.

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes leave off doing a certain act, even though he liked to do it, out of concern that other companions might see him and start practicing it, and thus it might become obligatory upon them. For example, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never performed the Duha (forenoon) prayer, but I perform it.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Layla (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that no one informed us that they saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing the Duha prayer. However, Umm Hani stated that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ghusl in her house, and after that, he prayed eight rak‘ahs. I have never seen him perform such a light prayer, although he performed the bowing and prostration completely.
