Descent of Tranquility When Quran is Recited
Hadith Number: 458
Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a companion (Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr, may Allah be pleased with him) recited Surah Al-Kahf (in prayer). In the same house, a horse was tied, and the horse began to jump and prance. (Sayyiduna Usayd, may Allah be pleased with him, did not pay attention to it and entrusted it to Allah.) After he finished the prayer with salam, he saw that a piece of cloud had cast its shade over his entire house. He mentioned this incident to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said:“Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for this is tranquility (sakinah) which descended because of the Qur’an (or he said) was descending.”

Sayyiduna Usaid bin Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that one night I was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah and my horse was tied near me. Suddenly, the horse began to startle, so I stopped reciting and the horse calmed down. Then I started reciting again and the horse startled once more. Again, when I stopped reciting, the horse became quiet. The third time, when I began reciting, the horse startled again. Since my son Yahya was close to the horse, I feared he might get hurt, so I stopped reciting and moved the child away from there. Then I looked up but saw nothing. In the morning, I related this incident to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ibn Hudair, you should have kept reciting and not stopped (that would have been better)." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was afraid the horse might trample my son Yahya, as he was very close to it. I raised my head and then went towards Yahya. Then I raised my head towards the sky and saw something like a canopy with lamps in it. When I went out again, I did not see it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you know what that was?" Sayyiduna Usaid (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Those were angels who had come near to listen to your voice. If you had continued reciting all night, people would have seen them in the morning; they would not have remained hidden from the people."

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The example of the believer who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citrus fruit, whose fragrance is pure and whose taste is pure. And the example of the one who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date, which has no fragrance but its taste is sweet. And the example of the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like basil, whose fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the example of the hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like colocynth, which has no fragrance and its taste is also bitter.

I saw that tears were flowing from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (‘Kuff’ and ‘Amsik’ both mean the same, i.e., stop.) In this verse, there is mention of the Day of Judgment when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will be presented as a witness over his Ummah.

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I recited this Surah before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he praised my recitation." He noticed that the objector's mouth smelled of wine, so he said, "He commits two sins together: making a false statement about the Book of Allah and drinking wine." Then he had the prescribed punishment carried out on him.
