Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know that a certain person had sold wine. He said, "May Allah destroy and ruin him. Does he not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'May Allah destroy the Jews; fat was made unlawful for them, but they melted it and sold it.'"

Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not sell gold for gold unless it is equal on both sides; do not allow any decrease or increase on either side. And do not sell silver for silver unless it is equal on both sides; do not allow any decrease or increase on either side. And do not sell deferred payment for immediate payment.

Abu Al-Minhāl narrated that I asked Al-Barā’ bin ‘Āzib and Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them) about the exchange of currency. Both of them referred to each other, saying, "He is better than me." Finally, both of them informed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling gold for silver on credit.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade selling silver for silver and gold for gold except that it be equal for equal. However, we may buy gold for silver in any way we wish, and likewise, we may buy silver for gold in any way we wish.

Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man as a collector in Khaybar. That person brought a high-quality type of date. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired whether all the dates of Khaybar were of this kind. He replied, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! We buy one sa’ of these dates by giving two sa’ of inferior dates, and sometimes we take two sa’ in exchange for three sa’." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not do so. Instead, sell the inferior dates first and then buy the good quality dates with that money."

Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) brought Barni dates (a superior type of date) to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "Where did you get these from?" He replied, "We had inferior dates. We exchanged two sa' of them for one sa' of these so that we could feed them to you." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Oh! Oh! This is usury, absolutely usury. Do not do this. However, if you intend to buy good dates, then sell the inferior dates and buy the superior ones with that price."

Hazrat Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that we used to receive different types of dates together (from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), and we used to sell two sa' of dates in exchange for one sa'. Upon this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that two sa' should not be sold in exchange for one sa', nor should two dirhams be sold in exchange for one dirham.

Hadith Number: 1027
Abu Salih Ziyad heard from Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a dinar can be exchanged for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham (sold in exchange). Upon this, I said to him that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) does not permit this. Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that then I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) about this, whether you heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or found it in the Book of Allah? He said that I do not claim either of these things. You people know the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) better than I do. However, Usama (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said (that in the mentioned cases) usury only occurs in the case of credit.

Hadith Number: 1028
Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The lawful is clear and the unlawful is also clear, and between the two are some doubtful matters which many people do not know (whether they are lawful or unlawful). So whoever avoids the doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honor, and whoever falls into the doubtful matters is like a shepherd who grazes his animals near a (royal protected) pasture; it is likely that he will soon enter it (and be considered a royal offender). Listen! Every king has a protected pasture. Allah’s protected pasture on His earth is His prohibited things. (So avoid them and) listen! There is a piece of flesh in the body; when it is sound, the whole body is sound, and when it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Listen! That piece is the heart of a person.
