It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whom do you consider to be a martyr? The people said: The one who is killed fighting in the way of Allah is a martyr. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the martyrs of my Ummah will be few. The one who is killed in the way of Allah is also a martyr, the one who dies of plague in the way of Allah is also a martyr, the one who drowns in the way of Allah is also a martyr, the one who dies after falling from his animal in the way of Allah is also a martyr, and the one who dies of pneumonia in the way of Allah is also a martyr. Muhammad, the narrator, said: By "majnoob" is meant "sahib al-janb" (the one suffering from a side disease). In one narration, there is also this addition: Death due to abdominal disease is also martyrdom, and women who die in the state of postnatal bleeding are also martyrs.

It is narrated from Jabir bin Atik that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to pass away, one of his daughters said: By Allah! I had hoped that you would be martyred; in any case, you had made your preparations. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted has granted him the reward according to his intention. And tell me, what do you people consider as martyrdom? The people said: Being killed in the way of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Besides being killed in the way of Allah, there are seven other types of martyrdom: The one who dies in a plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies due to internal abscesses (such as cancer, tumors, etc.) is a martyr, the one who dies from a stomach disease is a martyr, the one who dies by burning is a martyr, the one who dies under a collapsed wall is a martyr, and the woman who dies due to pregnancy is a martyr.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: If I were to swear nine times that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was martyred, that would be more beloved to me than swearing once that he was not martyred. The reason for this is that Allah Almighty made him a Prophet and took him as a martyr. The narrator A‘mash says: When I told this to Ibrahim, he said: This was the belief of those people that the Jews had poisoned the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Lady Umm Mubashir (may Allah be pleased with her), who had prayed towards both Qiblahs with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated that she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during his final illness and said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, what do you consider to be the cause of your illness? I think it is because of the food which my son also ate with you at Khaybar. Her son had passed away before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not consider anything else to be the cause except that. Now the time has come for the vein from which the heart flows to be cut.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man migrated from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: You have left shirk, but now jihad remains. Tell me, are your parents alive in Yemen? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Did they give you permission? He said: No. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then return to your parents and seek their permission.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) under that tree, when a man came to him from that valley, greeted him, and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have intended to strive (jihad) with you; through this action, I seek the pleasure of Allah Almighty and the home of the Hereafter. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Are any of your parents alive? He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! Both are alive. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then return and do good to them. In another narration: Strive in serving them. So he returned in the direction from which he had come.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Jahimah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I want to go for jihad and I have come to consult you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is your mother alive? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then stay with her, for indeed Paradise is at her feet. Then he repeated the same thing in different gatherings a second and then a third time.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khubaib bin Yasaf (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I and a man from my tribe came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to go for a battle. We had not yet become Muslims. So we said: Indeed, we feel ashamed that our tribe participates in a battle and we are not included with them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you become Muslims? They said: No. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, in opposition to the polytheists, we do not seek help from the polytheists. Upon hearing this statement, we became Muslims and participated in that battle with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I killed a man and he had also struck me a blow. Then I married his daughter. She used to say: Do not lose the man who struck you between the shoulder and the side, and I used to say to her: Do not lose the man who quickly sent your father into the fire.
