Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer eleven rak'ahs of prayer at night, one of which was Witr. Then, when he finished, he would lie down on his right side.

Imam Tirmidhi says that Ibn Abi Umar narrated to us from Ma'n, and he from Imam Malik, and he from Imam Ibn Shihab, with a narration similar to this. Also, Qutaybah informed us from Imam Malik, and he from Ibn Shihab, in the same manner.

Mother of the Believers, Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer nine (9) units of prayer at night.

Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi, may Allah have mercy on him, says that Mahmood bin Ghailan narrated to us, he from Yahya bin Adam, he from Sufyan al-Thawri, who narrated from A’mash in the same manner.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he prayed one night with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, he said: "Allah is the Greatest, He is the Sovereign, the Possessor of Power, Greatness, and Majesty." He says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah Al-Baqarah, then performed bowing (ruku‘), and his bowing was as long as his standing. In bowing, he used to recite «سبحان ربي العظيم، سبحان ربي العظيم» . Then he raised his blessed head from bowing (and stood upright), and his standing was also as long as his bowing, and in it he used to recite «لربي الحمد، لربي الحمد» . Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration (sajdah), and his prostration was as long as his standing, and in it he used to recite «سبحان ربي الأعلى، سبحان ربي الأعلى» . Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head from prostration, he sat between the two prostrations for about the same duration as the prostration and continued to recite «رب اغفر لي، رب اغفر لي» . Until he recited Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Aal-e-Imran, Surah An-Nisa’, and Surah Al-Ma’idah or Surah Al-An‘am. The narrator of the hadith, Shu‘bah, was uncertain whether he recited Surah Al-Ma’idah or Surah Al-An‘am. Imam Abu ‘Isa Tirmidhi says that (in the chain of narration) the name of Abu Hamzah is Talhah bin Zayd, and the name of Abu Hamzah Al-Duba‘i is Nasr bin ‘Imran.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited only one verse of the Noble Qur'an in prayer throughout the night.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I prayed one night with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace be upon him) stood for a very long time until I intended to do something bad. He was asked: What bad did you intend? He replied: I intended to sit down and leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing.

Imam Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi, may Allah have mercy on him, says that Sufyan bin Waki’ narrated to us, who narrated from Jarir, from A’mash, a narration similar to the above-mentioned hadith.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform prayer sitting, he would also recite (Qur'an) while sitting. Then, when about thirty or forty verses remained from the recitation, he would stand up and recite the remainder while standing, then perform bowing (ruku') and prostration (sajda). He would perform the second rak'ah in the same manner as the first rak'ah.

Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I asked Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the voluntary prayers of Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). She replied: Sometimes the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would spend a long portion of the night standing in prayer, and sometimes he would spend a long portion of the night sitting in prayer. When he recited (Qur'an) standing, he would also perform bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujood) standing, and when he recited sitting, he would also perform bowing and prostration sitting.
