Abu Majdah says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: I know the first man whose hand was cut by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A thief was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his hand to be cut, but it seemed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distressed. The companions said: O Messenger of Allah! It seems that you dislike cutting his hand? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“What could prevent me? Do not be helpers of Satan against your brother. It befits every leader that when a prescribed punishment reaches him, he should carry it out. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and loves forgiveness. (The command of Allah, the Exalted, is:) ‘And let them pardon and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.’”(__QUR_N__ Surah Nur: 22)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Fighting with a believer is disbelief, and abusing him is wickedness, and it is not permissible for any Muslim to sever relations with his brother for more than three days (due to breaking ties of kinship).”

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit says: When this verse was revealed: "Those who do not call upon any other deity along with Allah, nor do they kill a soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right." (__QUR_N__: Surah Furqan: 68), we were greatly astonished at the flexibility and leniency given in this verse. Six months passed, then this verse was revealed: "Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein forever, and Allah is angry with him and has cursed him... till the end." (__QUR_N__: Surah Nisa: 93)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the most severe punishment will be for these people: the man whom a prophet killed, or the one who killed a prophet, a misguided leader, and the one who mutilates the most among those who mutilate."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Iblis sends out his armies in the morning and says: 'Whoever leads a Muslim astray, I will crown him.' (When the armies return,) one of them says: 'I kept tempting him until he divorced his wife.' Iblis says: 'Perhaps he will marry again.' Another comes and says: 'I kept luring him until he disobeyed his parents.' He says: '(This is not a big deal because) perhaps he will later treat them well.' Another comes and says: 'I stuck with him until he committed shirk (associating partners with Allah).' Iblis says: 'You have excelled.' (Meanwhile) another comes and says: 'I did not leave so-and-so until he committed murder.' Iblis says: '(Well done) you have done the utmost,' and then he crowns him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "(On the Day of Resurrection) a man will come holding the hand of another man and will say: O my Lord, this one killed me. Allah Almighty will ask: Why did you kill him? He will say: For Your greatness. Allah Almighty will say: Indeed, greatness is only for Me. Another man will come holding the hand of another man and will say: He killed me. Allah Almighty will ask: Why did you kill him? He will say: For the greatness of so-and-so. Allah Almighty will say: This greatness is not the right of so-and-so, so he will also bear the burden of his sin."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Banu Khuza‘ah killed a man from Banu Laith in retaliation for one of their own who had been killed. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he mounted his ride and delivered a sermon, in which he also said:“Allah Almighty has forbidden killing in Makkah, and He has given authority over them to the Messenger of Allah and the believers. Beware! This (the Sacred Sanctuary of Makkah) was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me. Be aware! It was made lawful for me for only a short period of the day. Beware! Now, at this time, it is forbidden; its thorns are not to be uprooted, its trees are not to be cut, and its lost property is not to be picked up except for the purpose of announcing it. If someone is killed, his heirs have the right to one of two options: either they accept blood money or they seek retribution (qisas).”

A Yemeni man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! (Please) have this sermon written for me. He said:“Write it for Abu So-and-so.”(During the Prophet’s sermon) a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow us to cut the grass called idhkhir, for we use it in our houses and graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“(Alright) you may cut the idhkhir grass.”Imam Muslim has added (these words in his narration): Waleed said: I said to Awza‘i:“(When the Yemeni said:) O Messenger of Allah! Have it written for me—what did he mean?”He said: The sermon which he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said something on the second day of the conquest of Makkah. My ears heard it, my heart remembered it, and my eyes saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying it. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "Indeed, Makkah was not made sacred by the people, but Allah, the Exalted, made it sacred. Now, it is not lawful for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood here or to cut down its trees. If anyone seeks permission (for fighting) by using the fighting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as a proof for himself, then say to him that Allah, the Exalted, allowed His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (to fight) in Makkah, and He did not allow you, and even for me, it was permitted only for a part of the day. After that, its sanctity returned as it was yesterday. Those who are present should convey (these rulings) to those who are absent."
