Prayer times and their virtues
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in Iraq, and one day the prayer was delayed. He said,“O Mughira! What have you done? Do you not know that (one day) Jibreel (peace be upon him) came and he led the prayer, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also prayed (at that time). Then (Jibreel) led the second prayer, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also prayed. Then (Jibreel) led the third prayer, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also prayed. Then (Jibreel) led the fourth prayer, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also prayed. Then (Jibreel) led the fifth prayer, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also prayed. Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, ‘I have been commanded to do so.’”

Prayer is expiation for sins
`Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that they were sitting with the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he said,“Who among you remembers the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the trial (fitnah)?”I said,“I remember it exactly as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it.”The Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said,“Then relate it.”So I said,“The trial that befalls a man concerning his wife, his wealth, and his children is expiated by prayer, fasting, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.”The Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said,“I do not mean this, but rather the trial which will surge like the waves of the sea.”Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“O Commander of the Faithful! You have nothing to fear from that trial, for there is a closed door between you and it.”The Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said,“Will the door be broken or opened?”Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“It will be broken.”Then the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), said,“Then it will never be closed again.”Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked,“Did ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) know what the door was?”He said,“Yes, just as you know that night follows day.”(Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith that was not mistaken. So he was asked about the door, and he said,“The door was the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).”

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): A man kissed a (non-mahram) woman, then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him about it. So Allah, the Most Great and Exalted, revealed this verse: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is this only for me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, "It is for my entire Ummah."

Virtue of praying at appointed time
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "Which deed is most beloved to Allah?" He replied, "Prayer, which is performed at its proper time." I then asked, "After that, which one?" He (peace be upon him) said, "After that, obedience to parents." I asked again, "After that, which one?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Striving in the way of Allah." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned to me only this much, and if I had asked him for more, he would have told me more.

Five daily prayers expiate sins
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "If there was a river at the door of any one of you in which he bathed five times a day, do you think that any dirt would remain on him?" The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, replied: "Nothing of his dirt would remain." So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This is the example of the five prayers; Allah wipes out sins through them."

Delaying Zuhr due to heat is permissible
Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "When the heat becomes intense, perform the prayer when it cools down, because the severity of heat is from the raging of Hell. And Hell complained to its Lord and said: O my Lord! One part of me has consumed another part. So Allah allowed it two breaths, one in the winter and one in the summer. And that is the severe heat which you feel and the severe cold which you experience."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The mu’adhdhin wanted to give the adhan for Zuhr, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him:“Let it cool down.”Then he wanted to give the adhan again, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him:“Let it cool down.”This continued until we saw the shade of the hills. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“The severity of heat is from the boiling of Hell, so when the heat is intense, perform (the Zuhr) prayer when it cools down.”

Zuhr time begins at midday
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that (one day) when the sun had declined, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and performed the Zuhr prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit and mentioned the Day of Resurrection and stated: "There will be great events in it." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wants to ask something, let him ask. Whatever you ask me, I will tell you as long as I am in this place." So the people wept a lot, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said several times: "Ask me." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and asked, "Who is my father?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father is Hudhafah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "Ask me." So the Commander of the Faithful, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), sat down on his knees and said: "We are pleased with Allah, Glorious is His Majesty, as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as our Prophet." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became silent. After that, he said that Paradise and Hell have just been presented before me in this corner of the wall; I have never seen anything as excellent (as Paradise) and anything as terrible (as Hell)."
