How adhan began
Narrated Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that when the Muslims came to Madinah, they used to gather for prayer by estimating the time, and at that time, there was no formal call to prayer (adhan). One day, the Muslims discussed this matter (that there should be some announcement). Some suggested making a bell like the Christians’ bell, and some said no, rather make a horn like the Jews’ horn. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, why not appoint a man who would call to prayer (give the adhan) for the prayer. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Bilal, get up and give the adhan for the prayer.”

Virtue of giving adhan
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the call to prayer (adhan) is given, Satan turns his back and runs away (and out of fear) he passes wind as he runs (and keeps running) until he does not hear the sound of the adhan. Then when the adhan is completed, he comes back, and when the iqamah for prayer is pronounced, he turns his back and runs away again until the iqamah is completed. Then he comes back and puts whispers between a man and his heart. He says, 'Remember such and such, remember such and such,' things which he had not remembered before, until a person forgets how much he has prayed."

Ceasing fighting upon hearing adhan
Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): When he (peace be upon him) fought with any people along with us, he would not allow us to plunder until morning came and he (peace be upon him) would wait. If he heard the call to prayer, he would refrain from (killing) those people, and if he did not hear the call to prayer, he would attack them.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If people knew what (reward) is in the call to prayer and in the first row, and they could not get it except by drawing lots, they would certainly draw lots. And if they knew what (reward) is in offering the Zuhr prayer at its earliest time, they would surely hasten to it. And if they knew what (reward) is in the Isha and Fajr prayers (offered in congregation), they would certainly come to them even if they had to crawl."

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gives the call to prayer at night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) gives the call to prayer."
