Mukhtasar Sahih Bukhari
Weeping near a sick person is not prohibited
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him accompanied by Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived there, he found him lying on his bed at home. The Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired: "Has he passed away?" The people replied, "O Messenger of Allah! No." Then the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) (seeing the severity of his illness) began to weep. When the people saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) weeping, they also began to weep. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah does not punish for the tears of the eye, nor for the grief of the heart, but He punishes or shows mercy because of this," and he pointed to his tongue. "And indeed, the deceased is punished because of the wailing and lamentation of his relatives (if done unjustly) over him."
Prohibition and rebuke of wailing and lamentation
Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge from us at the time of allegiance that we would not wail (over the dead), but except for five women, no one fulfilled this pledge: (1) Umm Sulaym, (2) Umm ‘Ala’, (3) the daughter of Abu Sabrah who was the wife of Sayyiduna Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him), (4) two other women. Or she said: the daughter of Abu Sabrah, the wife of Mu’adh, and one other woman.
Standing for the funeral is Sunnah
Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said:“When any one of you sees a funeral procession, if he is not accompanying it, he should stand up until it passes by him or before it passes by him or until it is placed down.”
When to sit after standing for a funeral
'(It is narrated from Sa'id al-Maqburi, may Allah have mercy on him)' During a funeral, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, took Marwan's hand and they both sat down before the bier was placed. At that very moment, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, came and took Marwan's hand and said, "Stand up! Indeed, he (Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) knows that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us from this." So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "He speaks the truth."
One who stood for a Jewish funeral
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): A funeral passed in front of us and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up. We said, "O Messenger of Allah! It was the funeral of a Jew." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whenever you see a funeral, stand up."
Men should carry the funeral, not women
Narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the funeral is placed and the men lift it on their shoulders, if the deceased was righteous, he says: 'Take me quickly.' And if he was not righteous, he says: 'Woe to me! Where are you taking me?' His voice is heard by everything except humans, and if humans were to hear it, they would fall unconscious."
It is Sunnah to hasten the funeral
Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "Hasten with the funeral, for if it was righteous, you are bringing it closer to good, and if it was otherwise, then it is an evil which you are removing from your necks."
Virtue of accompanying the funeral
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Whoever accompanies a funeral will receive the reward of one qirat. So Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate many ahadith to us about this. (Then he had this hadith inquired about from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)), so she confirmed Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say this. So Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Then we have missed out on many qirats (i.e., rewards).
Dislike of building mosques over graves
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said during his illness in which he passed away:“May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians, for they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship.”Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that if this had not been feared, the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would have been made prominent, but I fear that it might also be made into a mosque.
Funeral prayer for a woman who dies in postpartum bleeding
Narrated Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him): I offered the funeral prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a woman who had died during childbirth, and he stood in the middle (of her body) during her funeral prayer.
