The dead hear the sound of sandals
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: "When a servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn back after burying him (then the deceased becomes aware to the extent that) he hears the sound of their sandals. Two angels come to him, make him sit up, and ask him: 'What did you use to say about this man, that is, Muhammad (peace be upon him)?' If he says, 'I bear witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,' then it will be said to him: 'Look at your place which was in Hell; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said that he sees both places. But as for the disbeliever or the hypocrite, he replies: 'I do not know; I used to say what the people used to say.' So it will be said to him: 'You neither understood with your intellect nor followed (the righteous).' Then he will be struck between his ears with an iron hammer, because of which he will let out a scream that all creatures near him will hear except humans and jinn."

Desiring burial in a sacred or blessed place
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Angel of Death was sent to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him). When he came, Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) struck him such a blow that one of his eyes was gouged out. The angel returned to his Lord and said, "You have sent me to a servant who does not want to die." Allah Almighty restored his eye and commanded him to go back to Musa (peace be upon him) and say: "Place your hand on the back of an ox; for every hair that comes under your hand, you will be granted one year of life." (So the angel came and conveyed the message of Allah to Musa, peace be upon him.) He said, "O Lord! (When all those years have passed) what will happen then?" Allah Almighty said, "Then death will come." He said, "Let it be now." Then he prayed to Allah Almighty: "Bring me close to the Holy Land, as much as a stone's throw." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after narrating this said: "If I were there, I would show you the grave of Musa (peace be upon him) by the side of the road, near the red sand hill."

Funeral prayer for a martyr
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to put two men from among the martyrs of Uhud in a single garment, then he would ask, "Which of them knew more of the Qur'an?" When one of them was pointed out, he would put him first in the grave and say: "I will be a witness for these people on the Day of Resurrection." And he (peace be upon him) ordered that they be buried with their blood, and they were neither washed nor was funeral prayer offered for them.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out of Madinah one day and offered prayer over the martyrs of Uhud as he would offer prayer over the deceased. Then he returned and stood on the pulpit and said: "I will precede you at the Pond (Al-Kawthar) on the Day of Resurrection and will be a witness for you. And by Allah! Indeed, at this moment I am looking at my Pond, and the keys of the treasures of the earth, or (he said:) the keys of the earth, have been given to me. By Allah! I do not fear that you will become polytheists after me, but I fear that you will compete with one another for the world."

Funeral prayer for a child who accepted Islam and died; inviting children to Islam
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and some other people to Ibn Sayyad, until they found him playing with some boys near the houses of Bani Maghala, and Ibn Sayyad was near the age of puberty at that time. He did not realize that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had come. Until the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) struck him with his hand. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Ibn Sayyad: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" Ibn Sayyad looked at him and said: I bear witness that you are the Messenger of the unlettered (people). After that, Ibn Sayyad said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Do you bear witness that "I am the Messenger of Allah?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left him and said: "I believe in Allah and His Messengers." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "What do you see?" Ibn Sayyad replied: "A truthful one comes to me and a liar comes to me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your matter has been confused for you." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "I have kept something in my heart about you, tell me what it is?" (The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had in mind the verse of Surah ad-Dukhan: (So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke)). So Ibn Sayyad replied: "It is Dukh (smoke)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You cannot go beyond your limit." Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, allow me to strike his neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If he is (the Dajjal), you will never be able to overpower him, and if he is not, then there is no benefit in killing him." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that after this (once again) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the garden in which Ibn Sayyad was, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wanted to hear something from Ibn Sayyad secretly before he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him in a state that he was lying wrapped in a sheet, and some murmuring sound was coming from him. Then the mother of Ibn Sayyad saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) coming, although he was hiding among the date-palm trees, so she said to Ibn Sayyad: O Saf! (and Saf was the name of Ibn Sayyad), this is Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who has come. So Ibn Sayyad sat up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If this woman had left him in his state, i.e., had not informed him of my coming, the reality of the matter would have become clear."

Narrated Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): There was a Jewish boy who used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He became ill, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to visit him and sat by his head. Then he said to him: "Accept Islam." So the boy looked towards his father, who was sitting beside him. His father said to him: "Obey Abul-Qasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." So he accepted Islam. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out, saying: "Praise be to Allah who saved the boy from the Fire."

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Every child is born upon the natural disposition (fitrah) of Islam, but his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian, just as an animal gives birth to a complete and sound offspring—do you see any among them born mutilated?" Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite this verse after narrating the hadith: "The nature upon which Allah has created mankind. There is no altering Allah's creation. That is the correct and upright religion." (Surah Ar-Rum, Ayah: 30)

If a polytheist says La ilaha illallah at death, is he forgiven?
Saidna Musayyib bin Hazn (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Abu Talib’s death approached, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to him. He (peace be upon him) found Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah bin Mughirah with him. Saidna Musayyib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Abu Talib:“O uncle, say La ilaha illallah, so that I may testify for you before Allah.”Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said,“O Abu Talib! Will you turn away from the way of Abdul Muttalib?”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued to invite him to the testimony of faith, and they both kept repeating the same thing, until the last thing Abu Talib said was that he was on the way of Abdul Muttalib, and he refused to say La ilaha illallah (then he died). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Yes, by Allah, I will seek forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.”(So he, peace be upon him, began to seek forgiveness.) Upon this, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse:“It is not befitting for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists.”(Surah At-Tawbah: 133)

A scholar advising students near a grave
Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were at Baqi' graveyard with a funeral when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to us and sat down, and we sat around him. He had a stick in his hand, and he began to strike it on the ground. Then he said: "For every one of you, or (he said) for every living being, his place in Paradise or Hell has been written, and it has also been written whether he is sinful or righteous." So a man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we not rely on this and stop doing deeds? Because the one whose name is written among the righteous will surely turn towards good deeds, and the one whose name is written among the sinful will go towards evil." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Yes! Those whose names are among the righteous will be granted the ability to do good deeds, and those who are sinful will be granted the ability to do evil." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse: "As for he who gives (in charity) and fears Allah and believes in the best (reward), We will ease him toward ease (i.e., Paradise)." (Surah Al-Lail 5, 7)
