Visiting the sick
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when an Ansari companion came, greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, and then turned to leave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "O Ansari brother! How is my brother Sa'd?" He replied, "He is well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who among you will visit him?" (Saying this) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and we also stood up with him. There were more people with us, and we had neither shoes, nor socks, nor caps, nor shirts (this was the height of the Companions' asceticism and their disinterest in the world), and we walked on that stony ground until we reached him. And those who were with Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) moved aside, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who came with him went to him.

What to say to the sick and dying
Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When you visit a sick person or a deceased person, say good words, because the angels say Ameen to what you say. She says that when Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Abu Salamah has passed away. So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Pray like this:“O Allah! Forgive me and him, and grant me a better substitute than him.”She says that I made this supplication, so Allah Almighty granted me a better substitute than him, that is, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Prompting the dying to say“La ilaha illallah”
Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Instruct (encourage) your dying (those near death) to say "La ilaha illallah" (There is no god but Allah).
Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah wishes to meet him
‘Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever does not wish to meet Allah, Allah does not wish to meet him. I said,“O Messenger of Allah! All of us dislike death.”So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That is not what I meant. Rather, when the believer’s final moment comes, he is given the glad tidings of Allah’s mercy, His pleasure, and Paradise, so he wishes to meet Allah (and desires to be quickly freed from illness and the distresses of the world), and Allah also wishes to meet him. And when the disbeliever’s final moment comes, he is informed of Allah’s punishment and His anger, so he does not wish to meet Allah, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not wish to meet him.
In another narration, it is narrated from Shuraih bin Hani that Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also dislikes to meet him. After hearing this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), I went to Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), and said,“O Mother of the Believers! Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that if it is correct, then we are all doomed.”She said,“Whoever is destroyed by the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he is truly destroyed. Tell me, what is that (hadith)?”I said,“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever does not wish to meet Allah, Allah does not wish to meet him. And there is none among us who does not dislike death.”Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, but it does not mean what you think. Rather, when the eyes turn (upwards), and the soul is held in the chest, and the hair stands on end on the body, and the fingers become contracted (i.e., in the state of death), then at that time, whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also dislikes to meet him.

Having good expectations of Allah at death
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say one day before his death: "None of you should die except while having good expectations from Allah (that is, at the time of death, do not despair of Allah’s mercy, but rather hope for the grace and kindness of your Lord, and expect salvation and forgiveness from Him)."
Closing the eyes of the deceased and supplicating for them
Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) when his eyes had become fixed (i.e., he had passed away). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his eyes and said:“When the soul is taken away, the eyes follow it.”The people from his household began to weep, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Pray only for good for yourselves, for the angels say ‘Ameen’ to what you say.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed:“O Allah! Forgive Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him), raise his rank among those who are rightly guided, be the guardian of his family who remain, make his grave spacious and full of light for him. O Lord of all the worlds! Forgive us and forgive him.”
Covering the deceased with a cloth
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, a Yemeni cloak was placed over him.
Souls of believers and disbelievers
`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) (narrating from the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) says that when the soul of a believer departs from the body, two angels come before it and take it up to the sky. Hammad (the narrator of the hadith) said that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also mentioned the fragrance of that soul and musk, and said that the inhabitants of the heavens (the angels) say: "A pure soul has come from the earth. May Allah have mercy on you and on your body which you inhabited." Then they take it to the Lord of the worlds. Then the Lord of the worlds says: "Take it (to its place, i.e., in 'Illiyyin where the souls of the believers reside) and keep it there until the Day of Resurrection." And when the soul of a disbeliever departs (the narrator of the hadith) Hammad said that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned its foul odor and the curse upon it, that the inhabitants of the heavens say: "An impure soul has come from the earth." Then the command is given: "Take it (to its place in Sijjin where the souls of the disbelievers reside) until the Day of Resurrection." Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when mentioning the soul of the disbeliever and describing its foul odor, placed a fine cloth which he was wearing over his nose to demonstrate, and said: "Like this."
Patience at the onset of calamity
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by a woman who was weeping over her (deceased) child. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Fear Allah and be patient. The woman replied: What do you know of my calamity? When the Prophet (peace be upon him) left, it was said to the woman: Indeed, that was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then grief struck her like death. So the woman came to the door of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and found no doorkeeper at his door. She said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I did not recognize you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, patience is at the first stroke of calamity. (The narrator is in doubt whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) said "at the first stroke of calamity" or "at the very first stroke of calamity.")
Reward for patience on child’s death
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the women of the Ansar: "Whichever of you has three sons who die, and she (the woman) remains patient for the sake of Allah's pleasure, she will enter Paradise." A woman asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What if two children die?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, "Even two." In another chain of narration, it is reported in a marfu‘ form that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A Muslim whose three children die will not be touched by the fire of Hell, except to fulfill an oath (that is, Allah the Exalted has said: 'There is none among you but will pass over it [Hell] ,' so he will pass over Hell, but will not be punished in any other way)."
