مختصر صحيح مسلم
Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Prohibition of women following funerals
Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We were forbidden to follow the funeral procession, but not emphatically.
Standing for the funeral
Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: A funeral passed by and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, so we also stood up with him. Then we said, "O Messenger of Allah! It is the funeral of a Jewish woman." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Death is a distressing thing. When you see a funeral, stand up."
Standing for funeral is abrogated
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing, so we also stood with him, and when he began to sit, we also began to sit, that is, during the funeral.
Where the Imam stands during funeral prayer
`Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I offered the funeral prayer behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for the mother of Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), who had died during postpartum bleeding, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood at the middle of her body during the funeral prayer.
Takbirs in funeral prayer
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, informed (the companions) of the death of Najashi on the day he passed away. He went out with the companions to the prayer ground and offered four takbirs (in the funeral prayer) for him.
Regarding five takbirs
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say four takbirs in our funeral prayers, and once he said five takbirs over a funeral. So I asked him, and he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (would also sometimes say five takbirs).
Supplicating for the deceased in funeral prayer
Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over a deceased person, and I remembered these words from his supplication: "O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, show him kindness through Your grace, make his home (grave) spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail, cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt, give him a home better than his home, people better than his people, a wife better than his wife, admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave." To the extent that I wished I were the deceased.
Praying funeral prayer in the mosque
Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that when (the conqueror of Persia) Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the pure wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word asking that his funeral be brought through the mosque so that they could also offer the funeral prayer. So it was done as they requested. The bier was placed in front of their chambers so that they could pray, and then the funeral was taken out through the Gate of Funerals, which was towards Maqa’id. When people heard of this, they began to criticize and said,“Is a funeral ever brought into the mosque?”Upon this, Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said,“How quick people are to criticize something about which they have no knowledge! They criticized us for bringing the funeral into the mosque, whereas the fact is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for Suhail, the son of Bayda’, inside the mosque itself.”
Praying funeral prayer at the grave
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was an Abyssinian woman who used to clean the mosque, or it was a young man, and regarding him the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired. The people replied that he had died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Why did you not inform me?" It was as if they considered him insignificant and did not want to trouble the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Show me his grave." The people showed it to him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered prayer over it and said: "These graves are filled with darkness, and Allah, because of my prayer, illuminates them for their inhabitants."
Regarding one who commits suicide
'Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that a man (his funeral) was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who had killed himself with a broad arrow. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not offer his funeral prayer.'
