What to say at the time of calamity
Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: When any servant is afflicted with a calamity and he recites this supplication:“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un... Allahumma’jurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha”— that is,“Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed, to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and grant me something better than it in exchange.”(By reciting this supplication) Allah Almighty grants him reward for that calamity and gives him something better than what was lost. Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When (my first husband, Sayyiduna) Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, I recited (the mentioned supplication) as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed me, so (by the blessing of this supplication) Allah Almighty granted me a better husband (that is, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) than my previous husband.

Weeping over the deceased
‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Sa‘d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him, and ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf, Sa‘d, and ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) were with him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, he found him unconscious, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked,“Has he passed away?”The people replied,“No.”Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to weep. When the people saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, they all began to weep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Listen, Allah does not punish for the tears of the eyes or the grief of the heart, but He punishes or shows mercy because of this”—and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue—“that is, if a good word comes out of it, He shows mercy, and if an evil word comes out of it, He punishes.”

Severe warning against wailing
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: There are four things from the era of ignorance (i.e., the time of disbelief) in my Ummah that people will not abandon: boasting about one's lineage, defaming others' ancestry, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing (lamenting loudly) over the dead. And the woman who wails, if she does not repent before her death, then on the Day of Resurrection she will be clothed with a garment of sulphur and scabies.

Not of us: striking face and tearing clothes in grief
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, tears his collar, or speaks the words of the days of ignorance (disbelief). In another narration, the word "or" is replaced with "and".

Deceased is punished by the weeping of the living
Sayyida Amrah bint Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she heard from Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) (and in her presence it was mentioned that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that the dead is punished because of the weeping of the living over him), so Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: May Allah forgive Abu Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him), he did not lie but he made a mistake. The reality is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a Jewish woman over whom people were weeping, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They are weeping over her, while she is being punished in her grave.

About the one who finds relief and the one from whom people find relief
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah bin Rabi’i, may Allah be pleased with him, that a funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: "One who has found relief, and others have found relief from him." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is the meaning of 'one who has found relief and others have found relief from him'?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: "A believer finds relief from the hardships of the world (i.e., at the time of death), and from the departure of a wicked person, the servants, the city, the trees, and the animals find relief."

Washing the deceased
Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Lady Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to wash her an odd number of times, three or five times. And on the fifth time, to use camphor or (he said) a little bit of camphor.

Shrouding the deceased
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three white sheets made of Sahul cotton. There was neither a shirt nor a turban among them, and people had a doubt about the Hullah. The reality is that the Hullah was bought for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he might be shrouded in it, but then it was not used, and he was shrouded in three sheets made of white Sahul. And Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took the Hullah and said,“I will keep it and I will use it as my own shroud.”Then he said,“If Allah had liked it, it would have been used for the shroud of His Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),”so he sold it and gave its price in charity.

Best shroud for the deceased
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon one day and mentioned one of his companions who had passed away. He had been given a shroud that did not cover his private parts, and he was buried at night. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, expressed displeasure at his being buried at night, as he, peace and blessings be upon him, had not performed his funeral prayer. However, when a person is compelled (by necessity), it is excused. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any of you gives a shroud to his brother, he should give a good shroud (so that it covers his entire body well).

Hastening the funeral
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hasten with the funeral procession. For if the deceased was righteous, you are taking him towards goodness, and if he was evil, you are removing an evil from your necks.
