Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim
Obligation of Sadaqat al-Fitr from dates or barley
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory the Sadaqat al-Fitr after Ramadan upon the people: one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley, upon every free and slave, male and female, who is a Muslim.
Sadaqat al-Fitr from food, cheese, or raisins
Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to give Sadaqat al-Fitr on behalf of every young and old, free and slave, one sa’ of wheat or one sa’ of cheese or barley or dates or raisins. Then when Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came for Hajj or 'Umrah, he addressed the people from the pulpit and said: I think that two mudd (i.e., half a sa’) of the wheat of Syria is equal to one sa’ of dates (i.e., in value). So the people accepted this. But Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will continue to give what I used to give (i.e., one sa’) as long as I live. (Subhan Allah, this was adherence to the hadith and aversion to opinion and analogy.)
Giving Sadaqat al-Fitr before Eid prayer
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the giving of Sadaqat al-Fitr before going out for the (Eid) prayer.
Encouragement to give charity
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not wish that the mountain of Uhud be turned into gold for me and that even a single dinar remains with me for more than three days, except that I keep that dinar to pay off a debt to someone.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O assembly of women! Give charity and seek forgiveness, for I have seen that women are the majority of the inhabitants of Hell. An intelligent woman asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason that women are more in Hell? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They curse a lot and are ungrateful to their husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion, and more capable of making a wise man lose his senses, than you. That woman asked: What is the deficiency in our intelligence and religion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The deficiency in intelligence is that the testimony of two women is equal to the testimony of one man. And the deficiency in religion is that a woman does not pray for several days (every month due to menstruation) and does not fast in Ramadan (during the days of menstruation).
Encouragement to spend in Allah’s cause
`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that Allah Almighty says: O son of Adam! Spend, and I will spend on you. And (the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that Allah’s hand is full; spending day and night does not decrease it in the least.
Hastening to give charity before recipients disappear
Sayyiduna Haritha bin Wahb رضي الله عنه narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم saying: "Give charity. A time is near when a person will go out with his charity, and the one to whom he offers it will say, 'If you had brought it yesterday, I would have accepted it, but today I am not in need of it.' Thus, no one will be found to accept it."
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Near the Day of Judgment, the earth will throw out its treasures like great pillars of gold and silver. Then the murderer will come and say, "It was for this that I committed murder." And the one who broke ties of kinship will come and say, "It was for this that I severed my family relations." And the thief will come and say, "It was for this that my hand was cut off." Then all of them will leave it and none will take anything from it.
Giving charity to spouse and children
Lady Zainab, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“O assembly of women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry.”She said: Then I came to my husband, Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), and I said,“You are a poor, empty-handed man, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said that we should give charity. So go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him: If I give it to you and the charity is fulfilled, then good; otherwise, I will give it to someone else.”Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“You go yourself and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”Then I went, and an Ansari woman was standing at the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); her purpose was the same as mine. And the awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was very great. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out, so we said,“Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him that two women are at the door asking: If they give charity to their husbands and to the orphans whom they support, will it be accepted as charity or not? And do not tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who we are.”Lady Zainab said: Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said,“Who are they?”Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) replied,“One is a woman from the Ansar and the other is Zainab.”He (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Which Zainab?”He said,“The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him),“They will have a double reward in this: one for maintaining ties of kinship and the other for giving charity.”
Spending on close relatives
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Abu Talhah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was very wealthy in Madinah, and his most beloved wealth was a garden called Bairuha, which was in front of the Prophet’s Mosque. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go into it and drink its sweet water. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when this verse was revealed:“You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love in the way of Allah,”Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Allah Almighty says,“You will not attain righteousness until you spend from your beloved wealth,”and of all my wealth, Bairuha is the most beloved to me. It is charity in the way of Allah, and I hope for its reward from Allah and for it to be stored for me in the Hereafter. So, O Messenger of Allah, dispose of it wherever you wish. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is profitable wealth! This is profitable wealth! I have heard what you said, and I think it appropriate that you distribute it among your relatives. Then Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed it among his relatives and paternal cousins.
